Gumml0r

It’s dead but brain keeps it moving because of the parasite.

yzheng_

Doesn’t that make it climb trees though? And also wouldn’t it be a lot more uncoordinated and I don’t know, fungal like? I am just asking questions, I really don’t know. The pictures of the fungus online show either a completely covered spider, or an ant that seems normal until it is anchored then a stalk pops out of its head.

saladmunch2

There are horse hair worms as well and they go to water. Not sure what's in that video though.

ShortyTallZx

That's a primarily ant fungus, not uncommon but they're many other funguses.

Berettaelite1a

This is my fungus, there are many like it but this one is mine.

Saazkwat

Isn’t the plural for fungus fungi?

McToasty207

Yes, ophicordecyps acts by placing pressure on a region in the ants brain that signals to get somewhere high, it’s somewhat analogous to a brain tumour pressuring our brains and causing hallucinations and such.

foodank012018

There's more controlling parasites than just those fungus.

CasualObservr

> Doesn’t that make it climb trees though? The zombie tree climbing fungus is Cordyceps, although there could be others. If I had to guess, this looks like some other parasite laid its eggs in this insect and they chewed their way out, but I didn’t think that was survivable. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cordyceps

DefTheOcelot

This is a cicada plug, another variant of fungus that causes a cicada's entire lower body to rot away, and causes the cicada to be incredibly sexually aggressive. Horny bug zombies.

cameron_uo

Makes you wonder how many humans are infected with some kind of zombie fungus and we don’t know it

phuhcue

Many many people are infected with toxoplasma gondii. *corrected spelling, ty

The_Nerd_Sweeper

Makes you like cats or something right?

Agent00funk

Yeah, part of it's lifecycle requires being ingested by cats. Usually this parasite is found in rodents, and it forces them to seek out the smell of cat urine, and be a little bolder (scurrying outside of cover, in daylight, things like that), so that it will get caught and consumed by the cat. It's theorized that "crazy cat lady" syndrome is the result of an infestation of this parasite, but rather than forcing the person to go out and leave their cats, it encourages the host to stay near the cats, in the hopes that the cats will consume the host (it does this by messing with how the person smells/processes cat urine, just like rodents). That may be why crazy cat people tend to be shut-ins, the parasite wants them to be with cats.

srottydoesntknow

I've read evidence to support it may increase risk taking behaviors, I hadn't heard about the urine thing tho

Agent00funk

I'm on my phone and can't be assed to dig it up, but the theory behind being attracted to cat urine is that it's basically an easy smell to follow, and where there is cat urine, there is probably a cat whose gut the parasite wants to end up in. Edit: This isn't the article I remember reading, but it says a lot of the same things https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/are-cats-responsible-for-ldquo-cat-ladies-rdquo/

HippyFlipPosters

Is this...real? This is the best thing I've ever read.

Agent00funk

Yup, here's a link https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/are-cats-responsible-for-ldquo-cat-ladies-rdquo/

Sisyphus80

Another endemic “disease” is loneliness. What came first the litter or the isolation?🤔

mnhaverland

Oh my gosh. You’ve wrecked me for the night.

structureknits

I think I have that so bad lol

Shporno

Hard to say. It mostly spreads from handling cat litter then eating before washing your hands, so it goes without saying that most infected people are cat owners. So when you ask a bunch of infected people (who own cats), and a bunch of non infected people (who likely don't own cats) if they like cats, you probably wouldn't be surprised that the people who own cats like cats. Kinda akin to saying if you drive a sports car you will make more money, because obviously most people driving $100000 cars are not low income.

Organic_Ad1

Also increases depression, and something about coffee it think, but I might be conflating depression and coffee statistics. I think 80% of cat owners are infected. Maybe more

DrachenDad

It's only around 30 to 50 percent.

GreenEyedRose

I was supposed to cat-sit two cats in my home this weekend. After reading this I have changed my mind.

Mr24601

If you're not touching litter of outdoor cats, you're at no risk

DrachenDad

Why? Cats are fun.

Disenthalus

iamfi_ne

It's simple, tiktokers

PhantomBright

Do you realize that if we stopped creating division between everything we would all be far more connected to each other? Tik tok has people you will never agree with just like here. Both have a lot of cringe stuff too. Just saying. Yes I know it was a joke.

ollieollieoxinfree

Careful-The last guy that tried to get us to forgive and love each other got crucified...

PhantomBright

So be it. It all starts with small acts that no one is wanting to do. Even if it's just a smile when you make eye contact with a stranger. We all are the same no matter who. Love and cherish each other because we haven't made it this far in civilization without depending on each other. But most importantly Love yourself and let go of pain and hate. Don't forget them but release them to heal!

ollieollieoxinfree

With you! Unfortunately the disposable mindset has grown to include people and since social media has supplanted actual community there's no need to reconcile (or even care) for the people around us.

PhantomBright

Then let's change it. Seriously, what's stopping us. Not everyone can be reached but the ones who can are worth it. What's stopping us from building a city to challenge the current standards?

ollieollieoxinfree

Doing what I can! We will overcome.. There are dozens of us! DOZENS! ... of course I guess the first push started with a dozen too ;)

Definitely sarcoidosis. DEFINITELY!!!!!!

AromaticCoach7306

I think its cordyceps, same fungus from the last of us (its real) but in a much smaller scale.

Road_Frontage

Naw doesn't look like cordyceps. That infects healthy individuals and then does it business of rewiring. This is just eaten from the inside or outside but the head is still intact

guyincognito60

Exactly

Induced_Pandemic

Oh god, the same misinformation from the last thread is already spreading. This bug does not have cordyceps. Hes about 2 minutes from dying after being mostly eaten alive.

SushiEnthusiast

Exactly. Idk why everyone is so sure its cordyceps or any kind of parasite that controls the mind of the insect. Maybe its wishful thinking since its more interesting than a bug who escaped being eaten completely.

klonkish

They're sure of it because they've read it on here the last time it was posted

ProblemLongjumping12

Disregard this comment section! It's a false flag! Everyone in here is working for the spores to make us ignore the spore threat. THE SPORES ARE COMING *I've said too much* they found me! Eglblerbagaghergkhkf

Dabox720

Absolutely not. This bug was eaten by something and will be dead soon, there's no parasites involved.

Buddy, I don't think you have been given an award now.

MKleister

I see tons of those in Germany. They are called [Maikäfer](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maik%C3%A4fer) ("May Bug"). This one has been mostly eaten by ants, which is a common sight. They live as larvae in the earth, then emerge during late spring every 3-5 years and fly en masse. I could usually hear them bump into our housewall and windows during the evening. If they can't get off the ground fast enough or get injured from bumping into a wall too hard, the ants usually get them.

snifty

Apparently these are also known as Cockchafers. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melolontha](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melolontha) 😳

MalibuProducer77

Oh wow really? I didn't know that! But I wonder how is it still moving??

ThatOneGuy532

Insects don't die of blood loss, they breathe through trachae. Since the nerves in the front part of the animal weren't damaged it will continue until it dies of thirst/hunger or is eaten.

arky_who

It won't be for long. Also the fungus theory is utter bullshit, the fungus doesn't animate dead tissue, it hijacks the nervous system. Like, insects just don't bleed out in the same way we do, so they can survive for a bit without immediately critical organs. Heck, if the wound is sealed, humans can survive for a bit with similar injuries, like not for long, but for a bit.

axethebarbarian

It helps that they don't need lungs and have multiple hearts

-007-_

Don’t the have book lungs?

axethebarbarian

I think only spiders have book lungs. Most insects have just simple spiracles.

SyntaxMissing

Oh and dragonfly larvae, from what I remember, have gills in their butts.

TacoSauce_

Thats just spiders! Insects have a passive respiratory system where tube of air called spiracles feed oxygen directly from the outside world to their tissue!

Their biology is drastically different than a mammal, its brain is still working and it can still breathe, it will likely live until it starves or dies of dehydration.

OneDougUnderPar

Well, if a human's brain is still working and they can still breathe, they also tend to be alive until they die too.

HungrySubstance

Most things are alive until they die.

WhiskeyDJones

Who are you, who is so wise in the ways of science?

zer0w0rries

Hashbrown117

No he's saying that's it, those are the ways it can die. We die from those plus: blood loss, shock, infection, lack of kidney filtration, not to mention that because we're vertebrates good luck moving around like that champ still can with your abdomen missing.

a_pinch_of_sarcasm

[So many dumb ways to die](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJNR2EpS0jw)

sammy0241

I think they are talking about how our circulatory and nervous systems work, if we rupture a pipe, we go down pretty fast. I believe that insect don't rely on the circulatory system as much so carving one out like this obviously doesn't stop them.

Two4

Well then YOU try surviving until starvation or dehydration kills you while having no major organs save your heart, lungs and brain

DorrajD

People die when they are killed

Dark_Devin

I know a good percentage of people that live without a functioning brain.

Iamatworkgoaway

Its a cicada at its reproductive stage, he doesn't need the extra weight, spends all day screaming ME SEX, ME SEX, ME SEX, he just wants a little love and isn't going to stop till he finds it.

ClogsInBronteland

Probably that zombie fungi took over.

ParanoidHumanoid1

It’s not, there would be a fruiting body emerging from the insect and Cordyceps (no matter the species) doesn’t eat the tissue like that. It looks like this insect just got wrecked by a bird

GoT_Eagles

That doesn’t explain half his body missing

defiantlion2113

I once read on a post on this in the past that it probably got eaten by a bird, but also got away. It has the means to stay alive but even if it isn’t eaten it probably didn’t live for weeks after, probably hours or days.

ClogsInBronteland

It only needs the brain to stay “alive”

Dogpeppers

It has a way less complicated circulatory system than we do.

ClogsInBronteland

Yeah, I meant to say nervous system but I got lazy and didn’t edit. You are right.

GoT_Eagles

The zombie fungus doesn’t decay the body though. Plus I thought it typically infects ants in the tropics.

ClogsInBronteland

No but other animals might have started eating it while it was wounded.

Celebophile

“Excuse me…. Just trying to make it to my grave…”

Famous-Example-8332

This might be parasitic wasp offspring eating it from the inside out. They can do some really funky things requiring the host’s body to keep it alive and dedicating all its energies to providing for them. I highly recommend the book “Parasite Rex” by Carl Zimmer.

YeetOnMyCock

You can see it’s back leg doesn’t work anymore, probably got just enough meat left to make a run for it

funnyref653

It’s because bugs, and other lower operating organisms like lobsters and jellyfish, don’t have a centralized brain. They have many smaller brains called neuroganglia scattered throughout the nervous system. Humans have them in our spines and they are responsible for involuntary movement like the beating of your heart and muscle reactions. Having a decentralized brain is the reason chickens can walk or run around with their heads cut off or how fish can survive while missing the top half of their skull.

coobeastie

You’re mistaken, fish and chickens are vertebrates like humans and have centralised nervous systems. Chickens run around headless because the nerve cords in their spine that control movement are triggered by the head being cut off and fish continue to swim while missing parts of their brain because sometimes the missing part isn’t a part involved in controlling movement.

Subushie

Chickens do not have a decentralized brain. Their brain is located at the base of their skull. If they are decapitated in the wrong way they can live a long time. However most animals with a central nervous system will continue moving after decapitation; it's easy for chickens to keep walking because it takes so few muscles for them to walk.

Iknownothing022

I’ve seen roaches walking, with no head. Nothing surprises me anymore
