Whelp, its a deal. I am definitely dairy allergic.

Ben and jerrys has awesome dairy free ice cream! I recommend dayia brand cheese for things like cheddar and mozzarella, and check out Toffutti brand for cream cheese and sour cream replacements... Hidden valley makes a great DF ranch now...
Edit: keep an eye out for foods you might not think of that might have butter/milk/etc... For me it was
Good luck with everything!
Ooooo Hiden Valley DF Ranch!? Definitely gonna try it!
I have tried the hidden valley! It's good but definitely tastes different than "real" ranch. It's the best ranch alternative I've tried though.
"Follow Your Heart" has a really good ranch too! I also love thier Honey Mustard, Blue Cheese, and Caesar!
TBH- I love anything by that brand, they do a great job w DF stuff!
I did hear that about Ben & Jerrys. Thanks for the reminder.
You should check and see if the “lactose free ice cream” you had was just normal ice cream with added lactaid. I am allergic to lactaid and have a worse reaction to it than actual dairy. (Lactaid makes my throat close up whereas dairy just makes me feel sick and gives me diarrhea.)
Unrelatedly there are actually a lot of delicious dairy free ice creams. I like the so delicious cashew based ones best.
Thanks for that point about the lactaid.
It could be completely unrelated but most “real dairy lactose free” milks and ice creams just have added lactose, whereas Parmesan cheese can actually be lactose free since it’s aged.
> most “real dairy lactose free” milks and ice creams just have added lactose
You mean added *lactase*.
Ya know, Ive noticed, if its just a little cheese, like Taco Bell forgot to leave it off, I dont get sick. Im not gonna start buying cheese to see how far I can push it, but I do notice differences. But that ice cream last night 😭
If you want to do at cheese I would recommend sticking to hard aged cheeses that you eat at home so you know the ingredients and what kind it is. Restaurants rarely know what kind of dairy was used or how long it was aged for.
I mostly avoid it all together bc it’s not worth the risk.
There always has to be one knowitall in the crowd. Im dx'd, Dr Internet, who doesnt know me. You are dangerous.
Cabot cheese is naturally lactose free. They're mainly at walmart and homeland in my area. It's my go to when I'm too lazy to go to the vegan store across town.
Yes yes yes on the cashew based ice cream!! I made some butter pecan ice cream using homemade cashew cream/milk and OH MY GAWD…… best ice cream ever. I also have celiac.
I tried cashew milk, and woke up with my throat getting tight. So assuming I cannot have cashew now.
I’m in the US and recently went DF. I find dairy in the weirdest places like McDonald’s French fries and some BBQ and salt and vinegar potato chips. You’ll need to spend a lot of time reading ingredient lists.
Good point, and you are right. Ive only been at this about a year. I think all the dairy in weird places is a dairy lobby thing.
My favorites dairy free ice cream is from the brand So Delicious. I like their chocolate cookies and cream
Their Cashew Caramel Crunch is SO good!
They have ice cream sandwiches and coffee creamer now too.
Love their little ice cream sandwiches
> My favorites dairy free ice cream is from the brand So Delicious.
But we should note that they use a number of different bases for their products: coconut milk, cashew milk, oat milk, and maybe others. My personal favorite is their coconut-milk-based line of fake ice cream.
Glad you are okay. Same happened to me last year before I went completely Dairy free. I thought I was just a little sensitive so I avoided it. Was eating BBQ Kettle corn potato chips. My throat started itching I needed my inhaler. Checked the ingredients “buttermilk” is in the bbq seasoning. I knew then it was over.
I dont know why dairy has to be in so many things. Even most asthma meds have lactose 🙄. Asthma meds, of all things, when dairy is probably the #1 food allergen. BTW, if you have any family history of ethnicities of Asian, African, or Middle Eastern, you should probably get tested for dairy allergy. Even if the ethnicity is not that much in your family, the dna proclivity toward dairy intolerance can cause intestinal issues, and lead to things like blockages, IBS, breathing difficulties, allergic asthma (me). With my brother, it was intestinal issues when we were kids.
I can’t do dairy either. I always thought it was the lactose and the found out it was the protein in the milk. You might want to look into the protein allergy part. They have a milk called A2 with lower protein. Hope this helps
Thats good advice, but I dont see the point, nor have the patience, to ascertain which part of the milk is bothering me. Its just a dairy allergy/intolerance. Humans werent meant to digest milk past about 5 years old, and Im fine with almond milk 😉
I luckily am only dairy free temporarily but man I feel you, I friggin miss cheese!
Who the heck is downvoting you?!? Thanks. I don't mind dairy-free cheese, but it's $$$ 😳
I don’t know haha oh well! I’ve found some decent substitutes but nothing I love… do you have a shredded cheese for pizza you like? I didn’t like the Daiya (I feel like it got gummy)… the best so far is the violife which at least tastes good to me!
Im open to good ideas. The Daiya cheese on pizza seems a bit off. Why are you temp avoiding dairy, out of curiosity?
My newborn has really bad reflux so in order to keep breastfeeding I have to cut all dairy and soy out of my diet. The soy part makes dairy alternatives especially difficult!
Poor baby. I nursed all 4. My youngest, until he was 2 years. I was not breast fed, and I must have had allergies since I was little. I cried all the time, and my dad ended up caring for me.
Good job being proactive 😊
My first had no issues so it’s so much different this time around! Amazing for you to nurse 4… it’s so challenging sometimes but so amazing!
Breastfeeding was a huge issue when mine were little. It was really being promoted. Im so glad it was. That youngest one, I also had at home. Best decision that ever got forced on me. Got the job when I was 3 months pregnant (they were so angry I didnt tell them 😅), so was not covered by insurance. They wanted $5,000 at the hospital, before I delivered. I said, yeah, thats gonna happen 🙄. Vultures 😡. So my friend from work was from Mexico. An older lady with 7 kids. She was my midwife. My son was 8# and nursed for 2 years 😁
Absolutely amazing and so worth it! You’ve got 4 lucky kiddos Mama!
Wooot! Time to go vegan!
Yepper. Its a gradual process. Heading that way, and agree with eating vegan. Someone else got me started with B12, and I noticed a difference right away.
I really like the So Delicious ice cream treats
Yeah, I just avoid it. I miss farmers cheese. Called Cotija:
Yeah….I hated coming to this realization. Dairy clogs up my head to the point of pain, gluten clogs up my intestines to the point of pain, however: I can eat damn near everything else, except walnuts.
I just wanna say it is so refreshing to find someone else who is allergic to gluten and dairy!!
Oh man i didn't know there was lactose free milk.
Built-in lifetime immunities!! And my immune system is seriously aggressive, so help in fighting pandemics 😁
