How many Dutch provinces can you name?
By - thijs1311
N & S Holland, Groningen, Friesland, Zealand ?
That’s 5 correct
I know all of them, I've started a quest to learn the provinces/districts/states/regions of every European country. I've got 15/47 done.
Good luck with the rest
Thank you :)
Have you learnt Sweden's provinces yet?
I'm going to be doing Sweden soon, I'm getting the easiest stuff out of the way first.
It’s good that your memory permits you to do so. I often forget things I’ve just learned until something makes me remember it.
Good luck with Slovenia lol, the largest official subdivisions are still more than 50 or something like that
The EU divided it into 12 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statistical_regions_of_Slovenia
yeah ok those are statistical regions, I was thinking about official subdivisions
Saving that one for later haha
How do you plan to keep yourself from forgetting the names? It’s one thing to learn for the first time, quite another to retain this information. And are you doing it with a particular aim in mind or just as a hobby
It's more of a hobby. I practice every day a couple times for each country that I know so I won't forget. Whether or not that'll go on for a long time, I don't know.
Good luck with Russia
Yeah, that and Turkey.
Do you know Croatia?
Not yet, no.
Done, it wasn't too bad to learn.
Only 8, right? (From there)
I believe so, I can't really remember how many, I can just name them if I've got a map in front of me.
damn it, I clicked 0 but I do know Nord and Zuid Holland as well as Drenthe and Groningen because my aunt lives near Drenthe and we would often drive over to Nederland when we visited my aunt and I only know Noord and Zuid Holland because I always got corrected when I called the entire country Holland
Where are you from, if I may ask?
Germany, but the Netherlands is very close to my heart (maybe I should learn the other provinces then) because I spent much of my childhood there and I also live close to the border I only have trouble speaking Dutch but I can understand it almost perfectly (I know that it's not that impressive because German and Dutch are very similar)
for someone who instantly thought 0 you know a lot😂
I was tired and for some reason I thought Dutch was Denmark (i still don't know why they say Dutch but at the same time still call the country the Netherlands in English)
um tbf i also thought it was denmark for some reason.
That’s only 2 provinces though, Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland (Noord=North, and Zuid=South)
Oh. I thought it was just one. Sweet. I know two Dutch provinces 😎
The more you know
The more you grow
Fries land 😳 potato
Oh shit Gelderland from A Knight’s Tale is real? That’s dope
Hou je bek ik woon daar
Eyyyy ik woon ook in Gelderland
Damn balen voor je gast... Ik hoop dat het gauw beter gaat.
Eyyyy. Hebbie ook Gelderland type 2?
Oh wow, I guess I did know one lol
Ja, gewoon ja
No België. It is Drenthe
I think they mean Zuid-Brabant. And yes, they forgot Drenthe.
Drenthe doesn't exist
haha. conspiracy confirmed
I mean, it were the seven provinces at first but if you looked on a map there were eight. They just ignored Drenthe cuz nobody gave a shit and (almost) no-one lived there
With capitals as well if you want
Go on then, name them
Sounds like effort :(
Haarlem, Den Haag, Middelburg, Utrecht, 's-Hertogenbosch, Maastricht, Assen, Zwolle, Groningen, Leeuwarden, Arnhem en Lelystad.
North and South Holland, I thought Grongigen was also one but I wasn't 100% sure if it was a city or a province so I didn't count it and idk how I forgot Zeeland.
My Dutch friend taught me how to, and knowledge of German also helped a bit.
North and South Holland, Zeeland, North Brabant, Limburg, Flevoland are the only ones I know from being a map lover.
Zeeland (because New Zealand), North and South Holland (because educational video saying Holland=/=Netherlands), Friesland (haha, Land of Fries, gotta remember that one)
Pretty much all of them. I spend most of my work day looking over tax treaties with (largely) European countries, and one of the recurring ones is the Netherlands. So I’m expected to be familiar with the names of the provinces there, in actual Dutch not anglicized.
Zeeland and Holland.
Holland = North-Holland and South-Holland.
North Holland, South Holland, Friesland, Limburg, Zeeland, Flevoland
North Holland, South Holland, Zeeland
By memory, I only remember the two Hollands, Limburg and Friesland.
Well it’s not too hard if you live in Friesland
Ga toch weg joh stomme buitenlander
Zou wel leuk zijn als Friesland z’n eigen land zou zijn maar helaas
Zeeland, North Holland, South Holland, Frisia, North Brabant, Guelderland. 6/12.
North and South Holland
I don't see a reason to know any of them...
Because we are supposed to know all the American states
But... Im European? I do know most states of the US though
Sorry my bad
Np and my original comment was stupid. Of course the more you know the better it is
That’s the spirit
didn't know that
Because the US is a very influential country with strong ties to the Netherlands. While the Netherlands are not as important to the US, so they don't need to learn those.
If Americans had to learn all the provinces of all the countries that learn the US states, then they'd have to probably learn like half the world if not more... And there's obviously no need for that.
But… but…. The Netherlands is very important though, we invented Wifi and Bluetooth
Hate to break it to you, but Bluetooth is Swedish, and Wifi got invented by an Australian guy, that only happened to work at a Dutch radio station at that moment.
But hey, I suppose yall still got the dikes at least!
From a quick skim of the Wikipedia articles, as with all things, it's more complicated. Bluetooth is the product of a a few people, at least one of which was Dutch and one of which was Swedish, working at a Swedish company. It first entered the consumer space in Swedish phones. WiFi evolved from an American protocol, was researched by Australian and Dutch researchers, then was branded under the name WiFi it by American and Finnish companies and popularized by an American company. Who "invented" WiFi or Bluetooth really just depends on where you draw the line. Some people draw the line for WiFi at WaveLan, which is solidly Dutch, but there are other reasonable places you could draw it. Similar for Bluetooth.
Come on, we’re Dutchies, we like to KOLONISEER stuff
And we are supposed to know Dutch states because of that? lol
If I really thunk hard I would’ve gotten Zeeland but I didn’t so 0
Holland and zeeland
Zealand, North Holland and South Holland
I can name Zeeland, Holland, and South Holland
Alright, but in which is Maaskantje located?
Damn, I just thought Holland was a big one or I would've had multiple. Only got Utrecht.
holland isnt a province, its north holland and south holland so then its 2
"Damn, I just thought Holland was a big one..."
Yes I know, that's what I got wrong. Chuffed that didn't slip past you.
which is a clue that im dutch xd
I'm Dutch so I probably should be able to name them all but I can only think of 9 haha... It's been a while since I last had to name all of them
Maakt niet uit, hebben we allemaal wel eens
Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, North Holland, South Holland, Zeeland, North Brabant, Limburg, Utrecht, Gelderland
Almost, just forgot Flevoland
I've been to Netherlands thrice yet I can't name a single place I know is a province lol.
there are two types of people i hate in this world:
people are intolerant of other people's cultures
and the dutch.
Holland, Friesland, and Brabant
HOI4 is a useful learning tool
I love going through random subs and finding other people who play these kinds of games.
jokes on you, i'm dutch
North Holland, South Holland and Zeeland, I know one more that is also big but I cant remember its name so 3
I can do North Holland, South Holland, Zeeland, and Overijessel (terribly misspelled)
You were pretty close
Two Hollands and Zeeland
I mean I can name as many as there are. I'm great at coming up with names. Biggest one I'd call Little John, then another one would be Bob. And so on.
You aren’t just a clown, you are the entire circus
I'm proud of my 1.
Holland is devided by 2. South and north-holland
Wait so does that mean that i know two or zero now?
I'm a optimistic person, I would say 2
well now its 2, but before this comment it was 0
How do people not know HOLLAND? I know Zeeland but I forgot I knew it before I voted lol I know 3-5
"Holland" Isn't one. It's Noord Holland and Zuid Holland
Fuck, wait does that count as 2 or 0?
Does Dutch Van Der Linde count
But he is Dutch
Holland and Zealand. And Curacao, if it is one.
Curaçao is a constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, just like Aruba, Sint-Maarten and The European Netherlands
Ah, okay. I also forgot about Frisia, than that'd be three.
Flanders? Also n/s Holland and Amsterdam
Flanders is Belgium, n/s Holland are correct, Amsterdam is a city located in North Holland
Yeah well how many states can you name in Germany Hmm? Beeindruck mich mal
I only know Holland lol
Is Holland a Dutch province? I hope so, otherwise subtract 1 from the 1 slot
If Amsterdam is a province than two, but if it isn't then just Holland.
Well Holland is actually 2, North and South Holland, but Amsterdam is part of North Holland, you still had 2 though
answered 0, should have answered 1 because Holland
How are there so many 0? Have these people never even heard of Holland?
Isn't there north and south Holland?
That’s 2. (North and south)
Thought I could name 3- Amsterdam, Eindhoven and Ajax - read the comments and it turns out I know 0
Haha Amsterdam and Eindhoven are cities, and Ajax is the football (or soccer) club of Amsterdam
Yeah I think I'll stick to naming cities from now on
North Holland, South Holland and Zealand
All of them multiplied by zero.
north and south holland are the only ones i know. But how is majority 0? Sureely people have heard of Holland before??
0 provinces but quite a few cities, feyenoord, rotterdam, amsterdam, Eindhoven, alkmaar, utrecht, groningen, zwolle. (I watch dutch soccer)
Hate to break it to ya, but Feyenoord is a neighborhood in Rotterdam (so the football club Feyenoord is also from Rotterdam)
Well that only means that i know more that i thought about netherlands, i also know neighborhoods 😂😂
North Holland and South Holland
The 2 hollands
well that makes sense
i only know them cause im dutch
Fuck. Flanders is in Belgium. Still, three. N, S Holland obviously, and Friesland because they have one of the coolest flags on the planet.
All those voting 10-12 must be Dutch
Zeeland is one right?
Z E G M A K K E R
Old Zealand is Dutch right?
Hmm I can only name 10 of them which 2 am I missing
edit: ah flevoland en gelderland vergeten
I know the Holland’s and Friesland, but I only pressed 2. From Texas btw

I can name them all but they will probably be incorrect
If Holland counts than 1
