That's probably because human babies aren't done cooking when they're born relative to most other mammals. We have to be born basically premature in order to fit through the pelvic bones of the mother (which over the evolution process have shrunk due to our uprighted walkiness). Newborn babies are pretty ugly most of the time. They start getting cute (and dangerous) when they start walking and learning shit.
Yeah I remember learning this in a primatology class long ago. Most non-human primates gestate for longer than humans as a result of our increased brain size. Otherwise, there'd be a lot of death during childbirth cause neither the mom or baby is exactly capable of birthing/being birthed anything larger. It's also one of the reasons why human childbirth is so dangerous compared to other species. I always interpreted it as humans evolved to be smarter and have larger brains, but we haven't quite hit the final form of sustaining/propagating that too well physically.
I also imagine this has only increased over time since non-human primates tend to grip onto their mother when still babies. Human babies can't really do that nor do they need to since we usually carry them upright either in our arms or strollers/backpack things nowadays. So that works as kind of the tradeoff there. Smarter/bigger brains but born less independent.
>Yeah I remember learning this in a primatology class long ago.
You're remembering incorrectly. Humans have the longest gestation period of primates. The shortest is around 54 days and humans average 267, with gorillas coming in close at 255 days.

Compared to other mammals Humans are on the higher end with the exception of horses and similar mammals and whales.

This whole thread is based on a false premise.
Yup, ya, you're right. They're still right that we pop out relatively underdeveloped, but you're correct in pointing out that the premise of gestation *time*, specifically, is wrong. The idea is on track, though. Like /u/buttparagus said, it's relative, and I think that's what people mean, too.
Humans are dense and need a long time to bake in the oven, but you have to take it out, cover it, and let it finish "baking itself" outside of the oven before they're done all the way, otherwise they overflow their baking pan. There's more post-oven prep that goes on.
Other animals usually take less time to bake and they're done (but still need to cool) when the timer goes off. You just take 'em out of the oven, cool off, and serve.
Makes me think of cheesecake vs birthday cake.
...mmmm cake.
that is what i also initially thought. but i think directly comparing durations is not very meaningful. however, if we compare the gestation periods relative to average species lifespan, the statement that humans gestate quicker makes sense.
I’ve heard those first couple of months or so referred to as the 4th trimester. After about three months they start getting cute and looking less alien like. They’re fully cooked so-to-speak and seem a lot less frail.
I've heard that pelvic bones also get progressively smaller due to genetics. In the past, women/babies would die during childbirth if they had narrow hips, which is not a very common occurrence nowadays.
Kurt Vonnegut would occasionally have a character speculate that humans would further evolve our over-sized heads until fetuses could no longer pop out. For our species: The End.
Lol they aren't done cooking. I started to over cook. I was born past my due date.
And even though I was the same exact weight and height when I was born as when my sibling was born. They look learn and i look like a hella plump baby.
> They start getting cute (and dangerous) when they start walking and learning shit.
I still remember that first shit my son had at 13 months old. Thirteen friggin months of held up food finally released…I wish they’d learn to do this sooner.
Where are you getting this from? Humans have one of the longer gestation periods for mammals.

I saw a comment on another post saying this is a temporary holding room they put them in while cleaning/work is done in the main enclosure. So he’s probably just hanging out in there temporarily.
Not that a lot of zoo animals *aren’t* kept in awful little rooms long term… 😔
Yeah I did a behind-the-scenes zookeeper for a day tour once and the place I went to had a temporary enclosure a lot like this where they moved some of the animals to while they cleaned out or repaired their normal habitats or if they needed to be checked on by a vet.
It's mostly empty because they use them for more than one type of animal. They already have to take out the hay, wash, disinfect, and de-scent the rooms between species so trying to also remove/replace enrichment or anything would add a lot of work when most of the animals spend less than a few hours in there anyway (the one I went to tried to keep it under an hour)
We saw the lions in theirs, they brought them in to clean a part of their normal enclosure and while they were in there had a keeper come to check on them. The zoo had trained the lions to show their bellies, inside their mouths, the bottom of their paws etc. (giving them treats when they did) so the keepers could try to catch injuries or illness before it was anything major. it was easier to do all that while they were in the smaller temporary enclosures than trying to get it done in the big one where the lions had more space.
"Harambe? Yes, that was what they used to call me. Harambe... that was my name. ***I*** am Haroomba. And I come back to you now, at the turn of the tide."
Zoos have inside and outside areas for most habitats. Many of the animals come in during the night. They also may spend time there when they're ill or when they've just arrived at the zoo. The inside areas are also used to safely sedate animals prior to being taken to hospital for exams or procedures. This is also only showing a piece of the indoor area. Y'all just chill unless we learn this isn't a reputable facility.
I'll back this up. My ex was a worker at San Francisco zoo. I was able to get a very kickass inside tour of the facility. This is exactly what I thought of when I saw this.
I thought the same and have only been to the Cincinnati Zoo a few times. Oh yeah, and the Indianapolis Zoo. People just wanna bitch about shit online for no reason. I don't get it.
Edit: and the South Bend Zoo.
Yeah, some animals will also hide out indoors when they want some privacy or feel stressed out from all the attention. Usually after a while they get used to all the visitors in the outdoor areas but a good zoo will always let animals go between areas as they desire.
yes, that's a whole sub, pretty popular, you get all sorts of people there, professionals from different spheres and countries, from time to time they arrange scheduled sessions with celebrities/scientists/sportsmen/etc.
they've got certain rules as every sub, you can check on the right, and you'll need to submit a proof (e.g. a picture in the zoo with your login on a piece of paper)
please consider doing an IAmA session sometime
Me too! Lol I just learned it’s its own sub and not just a special thing that I just get ads for once in a while. But I second you doing one, I would love to hear about your experience. I’ve always wanted to work with animals my whole life so would love to hear what you have to say.
My local zoo lets us see both the indoor and outdoor areas and I suspect they have a secondary more private indoor area for when they need it. And it us a very respectable zoo with a great conservation program. This area looks just fine with all the context this short clip can provide.
Everyone commenting about how awful that place looks for poor Haroomba, I can guess y'all's maximum age, cause for us gen x-ers, this place looks like Disneyland compared to what we had day in, day out - wood veneer paneling, shag carpet or linoleum, all the furniture was covered in plastic so we couldn't use it - I'd have killed to be able to bring some grass clippings or straw inside to play with, we were lucky if once a year we got a big box from an appliance to play in, that whole day was magical. And a mural? We only saw those at church daycare.
He almost definitely does - I frequent my local zoo and almost all the animals have both indoor and outdoor areas, it's very standard-issue. It's actually healthy for them to have indoor spaces that are relatively small, it gives them privacy and comfort.
Yes, it is not necessarily about the area or the concrete floor but just the complete emptiness. Hope this little fella has at least a corner or another room full of climbing possibilities and toys.
Maybe it's got little friends somewhere else? Possibly in the outside sections that I'm really hoping they have. I hope this person knows what they're doing
How do you know the chimp is alone? You don’t even see the whole habitat. In addition, this could have been filmed in winter, where it is too cold for them to be outside.
If it's winter and that's the space he's got, it'd be nice to see some toys or other sources of stimulation. Maybe he's waiting for a vet visit or something.
For a lot of big accredited zoos, which I cannot say for sure what this facility is or their status on accreditation, they often have more than one indoor space for apes. Again, we don’t know what stimulation is in there due to not seeing the entire space.
This could be an older habitat where keepers are working with what they have. Remodeling costs millions of dollars and often need funding from rich, private donors willing to fund the remodel or the city is willing to fund it with taxpayer money. The latter requires a whole voting process from the public to agree to use their money in that way. Sometimes these voting processes have to wait and be on a ballot during the voting season.
I don't understand why people think this is cute. An animal with nearly human intelligence in a cage with not toys or any other stimulation. Sad as shit IMHO.
What an appalling attempt at habitat for a caged animal, especially a young primate. No wonder the poor thing is exhibiting odd behaviour. This is not an animal being a derp it's an young primate with incipient behavioural problems arising from being caged in a concrete room with zero environmental enrichment. I've never liked zoos for exactly reasons like this.
You can look through some other comments on here, but this is most likely just an inside area, for when it's too cold outside, when they need to be brought to a vet, checked out, or when they just might choose to go in, etc!
He’s so small
Honestly. I find animal babies so much cuter than human babies.
So if it wasn't for the big heads, we'd ideally be born at 1 year old? Oddly worded but I'm too dumb to phrase it better.
I read 18mths, as most mammals need to be able to competently walk/run quite soon after birth.
Yeah I remember learning this in a primatology class long ago. Most non-human primates gestate for longer than humans as a result of our increased brain size. Otherwise, there'd be a lot of death during childbirth cause neither the mom or baby is exactly capable of birthing/being birthed anything larger. Understood. Humans are like scrambled eggs or steamed rice.
that is what i also initially thought. but i think directly comparing durations is not very meaningful. however, if we compare the gestation periods relative to average species lifespan, the statement that humans gestate quicker makes sense.
nuh uh it's cuz that lady ate a apple
Yeah but I don’t like the idea that we need a 2 year gestation period like elephants.
Nine months in, nine months out.
Probably about three to six months old. That's about when they start getting spunky.
I think they call it the 4th trimester don't they?
Hopefully before the kid has teeth.
😱
Probably 3mo. They don’t call the NB phase the 4th trimester for nothing. Yes, I know tri means three.
Imagine climbing out at 18 having to immediately work and pay taxes

OR human multiple births become the norm and the mother may or may not survive the operation to remove them
I have heard way more twins are being born, even aside from IVF.

I agree on the majority of what you mean, though newborn koalas and kangaroos ... not so much kol
Human babies are animal babies
This 100%. I don’t mean to be rude, your baby is kinda cute, but this PUPPY 😍
Except if it shits on your bed. Babies in general are just shit machines.
In my case it was throw up, last week, at 3:30 in the morning. Granted she wasn’t a puppy, but still.
human babies are adorable when they aren't crying
because they are. human babies are disgusting. lets all just raise cats instead
Such a brave thing to say. Thank you for your honesty.
Highly dependent on the animal lol. Naked mole rat babies are terrifying
Right. My buddy back when Facebook was new would always get banded for a week because he would tell people their new born are ugly haha
Until you have your own.
Nah. My kid looked like a potato until he was 1. Newborns are ugly little buggers
No. I have decided to never have children. I have several reasons for not wanting children.
Yeah I had a feeling you'd say that. Anyway, I was just pointing out that generally there isn't anything more precious than your own kids.

I hope it's not like when a dog does a scoot because it's got worms or something.
It's butt isn't actually on the ground all that much so probably not, they're just playing around.
They are such goobers.
It's in an empty room with a concrete floor and a bit of hay. I'd probably lose my mind and start doing this as well.
I saw a comment on another post saying this is a temporary holding room they put them in while cleaning/work is done in the main enclosure. So he’s probably just hanging out in there temporarily. Not that a lot of zoo animals *aren’t* kept in awful little rooms long term… 😔

That makes me feel better because I was really sad when I first watched this because the enclosure looks so sad
That's heartening to hear
Maybe it's in there because it does have worms and the poor baby is in quarantine. EDIT: I also wonder if it's maybe on some medication.
He's got lil hands with fingernails like we do, if his but is itchy he can just scratch it

I feel so bad for this lil creature. That place looks miserable.
That room is probably just the holding area while they clean the enclosure or to quarantine due to illness.
Better there than in a forest humans are deforesting and ripping apart their homes.
Doesn't look very exciting, does it. I think double the space and put more natural lighting. I'm just going to hope there is access to outside.

I would be bored too if I was trapped in a cage
I might be doing that also if I was living in that barren concrete cage.
And just like that, the world was right again.
Horrible confinement.
how can people find this entertaining? this poor WILD animal is stuck in a concrete hell. Educate yourself about zoos. This is horrible.
Don’t know why you are downvoted, these animals are prisoners for our entertainment and zoos should be banished imo
Indoor space for primates in zoos exists.
sad enough that primates in zoos (or zoos in general) exist. These animals belong in the wild. Not locked in for your eNtErtAinMenT.
bananas out for Haroomba!
So cute…too bad he will forever be deprived of his freedom and turned into a shadow of himself
I feel so bad for him. No one should have to live like this 💔
Such a magnifecent being… caged….
Sad to see.. got nothing but to push hay when they could be in the trees... I wish people didn't see them as enemies or food..
So messed up we keep them on concrete floors
This is sad as fuk
Forest painted concrete walls are still concrete walls.
I hate seeing apes inside these types of concrete enclosures, they look like prison cells.

Damn. They could put a little enrichment in there
In my head cannon he has a boner and is embarrassed so he hid it in a tuft of hay so no one sees it while he tries to discretely go across the room.
