Sounds like we have some things in common.
1. Farmers market @ bishop park sat mornings or creature Wednesday afternoons. Good community and produce for cooking
2. Ben burton park, sandy creek park, botanical gardens, 5 points, and lake herrick for walks or tanning/swimming. IM fields for sports (pickup games of spikeball, ultimate, soccer or whatever you play often going down).
3. HiLo, Trappeze, Normal Bar, Old Pal for drinks plus good food at the first two. Flicker/World Famous for drinks+small acts. Creature and Athentic for good craft beer/events/socializing. Akademia has the best craft imo but not as much of a social scene since it’s also a restaurant.
As a bonus..Personally I found some post-grad community here through my CrossFit gym. They are actually doing free classes this week if you wanted to pop in. You moved to a great place.
Have to second all these, and say hello to both of you fellow yuppies/townies in training.
Farmers market on Saturday is phenomenal, and the botanical garden is a must-see, been going there very regularly for the past year and am still finding nooks, corners, features and trails that blow my mind.
HiLo's great! And Hendershot's has got some of the best events. Comedy night's a blast.
When you go out to restaurants, try and set at the bar - folks here are friendly, and its easy to strike up a conversation with the bartenders and/or other people at the bar. I've made a good number of friends in Athens doing that, and if nothing else, its a bit less lonely until you find the friend group to with you.
Oh and Hendershots is a popular coffe shop and recently started a no-phone party/taco-Tuesday thing on Tuesday evenings (so tonight!). They put on some good concerts and other events as well.
I now have two of your posts saved for my own move to Athens 😅 (the other for that excellent stranger’s advice on neighborhoods to live in). I hope the moving went smoothly!
Look for some of the older bars or townie bars to hang out at. Most of my friends are 30-35 and we hang out at Allgoods or Georgia Theater Rooftop or Creature Comforts or Paloma Park. Friendly group that likes to socialize, talk life, and share a good drink and a few laughs
Man, I really like the Theater rooftop bar, but it just seems a bit overpriced to me. I suppose it’s the rooftop tax, but still.
It definitely is a plus that you can order some finger food there, though.
Tyche Games at 7pm on Tuesdays
Level Up Games at I think 6pm on Wednesdays
I think they do something on Thursday night too?
I think Rook and Pawn has a group at noon on Sundays.
When I moved to the area, I meet several good friends through the board game group at Tyches. The owners are super knowledgable too, so if you go in during normal hours and talk to them, you can probably find out a lot about other meetups in the area.
Learn to dance. There are weekly swing dance and salsa nights with beginner lessons, and during the school year the Ballroom club has regular lessons and dances. It's a good way to meet people.
Also just moved here from out of state, and not a student. I used to live here, but it's been a couple years. Any luck finding a sports league to join, or fun places to hang?
Not new to Athens but in my mid twenties as well and trying to make friends here! Not many people have stuck around in the years since college but my spouse and I love it here. :) feel free to dm me!

People here are really friendly! Great idea, thank you!
Always sit at the bar if you're alone, always.

That’s awesome! I’m happy to hear it! When do you move to the area?
August!
Are you a student?

Definitely paying for the views
There’s also the Young Professionals Network in Athens! Highly suggest joining them!! They host monthly get togethers at places around town.
You into board games? There are a couple clubs around town.
What are these clubs and how do I find them?

Do you have any hobbies? That's about your best bet. Find a club.
Come to trivia at grind house on Monday night with us
I can promise you I’m not the best at trivia but I can try! Shoot me a message
7 dollar pitchers of “grind house” lager. Need a say more?
If you happen to paddle, join “athens paddlers” on FB. I organize monthly happy hour paddles at sandy creek park. Always draws a good group
I can be your friend and show you around! I'm an athens native, into all the stuff you mentioned and more! I'm in my mid twenties as well.
Insta: Danielkil2000 Dm me I’ll be your friend!
I’m fairly new to Athens from out of state and haven’t made any friends yet. Feel free to dm me if you wanna connect :)

Hi! I just saw your comment on my post! So you and your husband live locally in Athens?
Yes we do!!
