I’m going Tuesday after work like I always do.
I think the sub's denizens have mostly turned out, so it's so much preaching to the choir around here.
Truth, seems like the athens reddit crowd is pretty involved, its a shame that more athens youth doesnt seem to care.
I’ll be voting on Tuesday
In Clarke county, Ages 18-29 are outpacing 30-39 and 40-49.
More than 60% of votes so far are from people over 50 years old even though the median age in Athens is 28.
Yeah, I noticed that. Old people vote more than any other age of 50 vote exponentially higher than everyone else all across the country
Is the median age inclusive of students who are not registered to vote in Clarke Co, but in their home state instead? Purely curious!
My spouse and I voted downtown today on our lunch hour.
Depends on who and how that number is reached, but as a general answer it probably does include them.
Doesn’t median age also include minors that aren’t eligible to vote too
I’m holding on to hope that it’s bc young people procrastinate worse than 50+. Maybe they’ll show up on Tuesday! (Please!!)
Seemed like the same dynamic when I early voted in Gwinnett though. Lots of retirees in line as they can go whenever they want and avoid the longer lines.
Why the push to get everyone to vote early? Is the concern that people are going to just forget to vote on Election Day? Because voting on Election Day is FAR easier for me. I just go across the street on my lunch break and there’s never a line.
Athens is great for voting on election day because we have so may voting places, which means there’s almost never a line. For some smaller towns, there’s only a few voting places, so lines get really long on election day which dissuades voters. Voting early makes sure that you aren’t contributing to a long line on election day so everyone can have the chance to vote!
Agreed. Been here ten years and have never had an issue on actual Election Day. In and out in 10 min. A complete breeze
That's pretty surprising. I've always had bad luck voting on election day.
Where's your polling place?
If you can vote early, why not? Assuming that you’ll have time, or remember to vote on the one day could be a mistake.
Is the polling place you go to not open for early voting? You could walk across the street to vote on any of the many early voting days, if it is
I voted early in my county. Wonder if it’s the same case for most others.
I voted today, but I know for some election day is easier.
A lot of the university students go to their home county to vote.
They also wouldn't be registered here, so they don't count as "low turnout".
I voted yesterday at the Lyndon house, a dozen voting stations (?) and there was only one other person voting except for me.
Early voting is now over.
Not all uga students are ga residents
You're required to get a Ga. driver's license after moving to the state, 30 days iirc. Most people would also want to establish residency as soon as possible because the cost of tuition is way higher for non-residents.
Students are not
And some ppl pay out of state tuition….
I'll be doing mine on election day. I've always done early or mail in voting but I kinda want to see what crazies show up, partly because if I keep my mouth shut these people think I'm a redneck trump supporter by my appearance lol. I love when those folks come up to me thinking I'm their buddy and I can essentially tell them to fuck off, honky.
I vote, whether it be early or on the actual day. Relax.
There are so many early voting days now it's very nice.
Did it the other week, my Frappchino didn't even get cold and I couldn't start a game of angry birds before I got shooed in to vote
“Local man yells at Reddit for the world not being Reddit”
Yeah, why do people keep re-asking the same question about youth voting rates as if they were the first person to notice? Low relative turnout among young people is one of the single most stable patterns in the history of democracy.
I’m going to vote red on Election Day.
At least you're voting. Everyone should exercise that right.
You do realize Walker is an imbecile, right?
It doesn't really matter, people are voting along strict party lines to try and maintain control of the Senate. If Walker was a democrat, I would vote for him even though I think he's an imbecile, because I don't want to lose control of the Senate.
Thats where we are politically in the US.
That you willingly sacrifice your values to game theory the politics. The system is broken then.
I cannot vote for anyone who is a member of a political party who has values and positions that I strongly disagree with. For example I cannot vote for a Republican because among other things the restrict a woman's right to choose.
I think many people vote that way.
Do you vote for both parties?
I do. I research the candidates and vote for the person I think is best
Yea he really is but the democrats are such a failure I’d honestly take a ham sandwich over them. Hopefully this L they are about to take will make them rethink some of the disastrous policies they promote. I doubt it though. What’s funny to me is that so many people overlook warnoks behavior. As if both aren’t pieces of shit.
If you're comfortable voting for him knowing that, then I guess there's not much else to say.
I don’t vote on personality so I might as well vote for the asshole not purposely fucking things up.
Yeah, the democrats have been so bad for the economy, they somehow crashed it globally!
To be fair it’s not just Biden. It was trump too and so many before him as well. Over spending and over printing fiat currency for decades will do that. The problem is that nobody is doing anything to address the root cause of these issues and honestly they are just making it worse. Then they just play the finger pointing game when one takes power and we get nowhere. The lockdowns, vaccine mandates, anti second amendment, terrible foreign policy and terrible domestic oil production policies are s few of the reasons I dislike biden. I don’t look at things from a right vs left perspective but rather a authoritarian vs liberty perspective. The dems really showed their true colors during Covid.
Interesting, I look at it the same way and come to the exact opposite conclusion.
I think what really did it for me was the Covid response.
You know Trump was in charge for the early COVID response, right?
The part where they tried to protect the populace from ramifications of a highly contagious, lethal disease; or the part where they asked us to wear a paper mask so we didn't inadvertently kill your elderly neighbors?
Democrats won't be taking the L you would be.
Sure whatever you have to say to cope.
What disastrous policies. Cause most of what I see from the gop is either misrepresentation or straight out lies.
Some of the big things that I vote for/against are overspending, foreign intervention, 2A rights, Covid restrictions, domestic oil production and less government/regulations in pretty much every way. I’m not a republican, I am a libertarian but the democrats have been so terrible the past few years that I had to take action and vote red even though I honestly don’t like a lot of their policies.
He might be, but he sure threw a mean pigskin for them dawgs.
Democracy depends on it.
I forgot to register cause I'm 18 💀
register now so you're able to do it in the future - it's super quick. And remember, the little local elections that don't have a bazillion ads have just as much impact on your life as the big ones. Sometimes more.
Yes, you're absolutely right, thank you! Ima great procrastinator, so I'll follow that advice
Currently enjoying my traffic-reduced roundabout on south milledge….paid for by TSPLOST money. I thank you for your service 😙
More impact. And please read the ballot questions before you go vote. They are worded in such a way to manipulate voters. Read what it means and make up your own mind
Wow so funny. You’re so quirky
Question, why is this Athens thread allowed to have a hard left-leaning political bias to it? I come here to hear about cool things in Athens, GA, not anyone's political crap.
Per the rules, posts must be relevant to Athens :( Not effing politics
“Why do the mods allow people I disagree with to post”
People that live in Athens complaining about other people in Athens not voting is fairly on topic about Athens.
Yeah, the question could have done without the second part. I'm just going to leave it though.
It’s pertinent because op is talking about Clarke Co?
If you’re expecting the sub for a city that has a massive university and highly educated population isn’t going to have “left leaning bias” in it, I’ve got a beach house in Idaho to sell you, bud.
A post encouraging voting is political because one party is squarely on the side of policies to disenfranchise voters and discourage turnout, I guess?
OK bud, it is that the politics are too allowed in a non-political thread. And the fact that it is mostly leaning makes it more unnecessary.
Are you interested in the beach house in Idaho or no? I can get get you a great deal.
I'm interested. As soon as you buy the bridge I have for sale.
Nah, I'll pass. See you at the polls on Tuesday.
Not wanting Herschel Walker to rep the state transcends political party, my guy.
welcome to reddit
TIL politics doesn't effect Athens
Why is my echo-chamber not echoey enough?
Unfortunately, that is pretty much every sub now. For some reason we have decided that our political affiliation is the most important aspect of our personality.
My point was, every sub being nothing but politics is boring. Everyone complains about the robo calls, stupid ads, and never ending campaign cycles. Then, they turn around and post nonstop political content to the Georgia sub, or a sub about their favorite TV show. I agree with the comment, I'd rather see posts about restaurants or fun things to do. Just my opinion, I guess some people are not bored with viewing everything through the political lens.
You're not alone. I plan to vote on election day but am sick to death of the non-stop political preaching and negative attack ads on social media. Frankly, those ads make me dislike every candidate and political party equally. It's not hard to see why people would be disinclined to vote. I know anyone saying anything other than "vote blue!" is going to get down voted into oblivion. Proves my point. The tribalism is grotesque.
It isn't really as big an issue in this sub, it is a local sub, so politics should be discussed from time to time. But, subs on trivial topics always have someone wanting to inject politics. I just wanted to talk about fishing or something.
I feel you on that. I follow this sub to learn about cool local events that aren't just for college students.
I would agree about it being appropriate if OP made this an educational post about local elections and candidates specific to ACC or even nearby counties, like Oconee. That's where there's a real knowledge gap and that content would be appropriate and helpful.
OP was complaining about early voter turn out. It makes this post seem ... less helpful.
Thank you for helping me make a sensible point. Let us stick to Athens, not politics.
Wym? The post is literally about Athens voters.
Disagree. the post should be about Athens, not the lack of voters that were going to let a certain individual get elected and that would ruin the state. The thread is Athens, not Athens/Georgia/LiberalPolitics/GoteForTheLliberal
Go start your own "proper" Athens subreddit then.
I was at this show last night. The dude IS Jewish and that wasn’t the joke at all. He was making fun of Hitler’s dick and called it Mein Cock-mpf.
*edit: so the original comment was someone saying the comic at World Famous claimed he was Jewish and encouraged everyone at the show to read Mein Kampf. That was a lie so they deleted their original comment because they suck!
I know Athens is left, I go there all the time. My complaint was why does the r/AthensGA always have politics pipe in what should be a thread about Athens, fun stuff, interesting stuff, cool places to go...keep the politics on a political thread. Thanks for the reply.
Will vote Tuesday and it won’t be for anybody that’s a democrat.
I do things that aren't good for me, too. Solidarity.
Vote for the guy that evicts people over $28 bucks 😂
Typical liberal: “GET OUT AND VOTE!!!! Unless it’s for the other candidate. Then don’t.”
My daughter is very liberal and she's insisting her father vote even though she knows it's very likely he'll vote differently than she will.
Typical conservative: "don't vote!"
Oh no. I can’t wait to vote to make yours worthless.
That's... not how it works.
Just finished voting with the rest of my house, chill your shit. This sub is pretty pro-voting so you're not really doing much good unless you just want to feel better. 🤷
What if we want walker to win? He’s clearly a passionate man
Still vote but I hope he loses.
Props. I disagree with you hoping he loses, but that was probably the most pleasant and friendly reddit comment I've ever seen on this site. Hope you enjoy your weekend and have yourself a nice beer. And get laid as well.
I think voting should be mandatory, maybe with an abstention option on the ballot if someone doesn't want to vote for any option. Showing up should be a bare minimum.
I hope you also have a great weekend. Go Dawgs!
About what? Lying?
I’ll be voting….for Walker. Go dawgs.
Because i dont like either party.
No , we need a doer .
Dont worry, already voted my friend. Walker was an easy choice.
Athens fam. Gather your tribe. Head to the voting booth together. Please.
Idiocracy here we come!
Yes we need Herschel!
On the field on Saturday, maybe. We need a thinker in the Senate, though
If you vote blue , you have no clue !
I’m proud to be a southern redneck!
Guns , God , and Glory. USA 🇺🇸
If you’re gonna put God on this list, don’t you think you should at least put him first?
That’s the problem with people like you , does not matter what order . There is no number beside them . Grow up !
Don't need to be classist to insult a bootlicking chud
Because I don’t give a damn about politics.
Nah I’m good. Prefer not to cast a vote for any of the clowns running….EVER. In my 40’s and never voted for anything and never will. And you know what, I sleep mighty fine knowing I don’t get my blood pressure boiling with this crap 👍🏻
