This is a Southern Studfish, *Fundulus stellifer,* as u/NotABadBelayer pointed out, and they're right that the dots on the sides are more irregular than in the Northern Studfish, *F. catenatus*. The edges of the dorsal and tail fins are dark/black in Southern Studfish, like this one, while Northern Studfish will have a yellow or pale edge. That's a nice male!
Close, but I think this looks a bit more like a southern studfish ( Fundulus stellifer ) due to the organization of the spots. Although it’s not true 100% of the time, northerns typically have the pigment arranged in neat lines, whereas southern’s spots are a bit more scattered.
OP; you can confirm your ID by which watershed you were in. If you were in the Tennessee river basin, it’s a northern, if you were in the upper Coosa basin, it’s a southern.
I think you might be right. Their range does match up. [http://fishesofgeorgia.uga.edu/index.php?page=speciespages/species\_page&key=fundstel](http://fishesofgeorgia.uga.edu/index.php?page=speciespages/species_page&key=fundstel)
Nice! I actually did my masters research in the Etowah and Conasauga rivers, my lab has been monitoring the shoal fish populations for decades. There is truly amazing biodiversity in there that a lot of people aren’t aware of.
It is really crazy to think. We have 50 pound catfish, sturgeon and incredible numbers of panfish species all in the same river. I tend to rotate between 4-5 bodies of water in the area and it amazes me daily the things you can catch.
Went on a wiki dive. I had no idea we had native killifish in the US. Then I found out the pupfish is a killifish. So there’s several native to the US! Interesting.
I will shamefully admit that I got right to the end knowing what happens and couldn’t follow through. I have hundreds of hours in Red Dead Online but I couldn’t fully finish RD2.
Yes killifish are so neat so many kinds. I also didn't know there was species that got so large. Used to see smalls species used to keep three different types tropical killi.
Would you be willing to PM me the creek? I'm actually visiting Atlanta right now and would love to catch one of those if it's not too far of a drive from me.
Sadly this creek is spring fed and heavily influenced by the main river. It’s pretty un-fishable right now. Normally it’s only about 8 feet across and 2 feet deep, right now it’s about 8 feet deep and insanely dirty water from the rain. If you’d like some fishing spots, let me know what kind of fish you’re targeting and I’ll send you all the spots you need. Lived in north ga all my life so I have quite a bit of knowledge. Thank you
Yeah that makes sense from the storm last night. A few spots I stopped at today were all brown water. I'm looking for flier, redear sunfish, longear Sunfish, white crappie, spotted bass, and any type of darters. Thanks
This is a killifish. Fun tank mates.
You know they are the most diverse and unique Breed of any fish. So specific in genetics that if a killifish from Africa of a similar breed mates with a South American killifish, the offspring are infertile.
But some sun species can change sex depending on water, temp, and breeding potential…so more men then women and some men become women.
A type in South America actually climb trees to lay their eggs in the folds to await the rainy season again.
Males of both Northern and Southern Studfish will absolutely destroy any other fish that's not on the bottom of the tank. They are very territorial and will de-scale other fish up to their size. These aren't annual killifish like ones in the pet trade.
Are you alway this technical and snappy on Reddit? Your like the grammar police when English is still the language I struggle with. Who are you to say what I can and can’t say? A little absurd don’t you think?

Northern Studfish Edit: southern studfish! Wasn’t aware of their existence, you learn something new every day.

I was in an offshoot of the Etowah river feeding out of lake Allatoona. Thanks for the ID!

Wow, never seen or even heard of these fish, they are beautiful looking
Went on a wiki dive. I had no idea we had native killifish in the US. Then I found out the pupfish is a killifish. So there’s several native to the US! Interesting.
We also have a saltwater killifish, and the mummichog which is in the same genus.
That's exactly what I thought it looked like as well. Cool!
Really cool, looks like a mix between a grayling and a trout! had no idea this species existed.
Beautiful fish!
Yo r/microfishing would love this
So many cool endemic species being posted on here lately..

*Fundulus stellifer cf. stelliferus*.
At first glance I said “killifish” but looked big compared to aquarium pets. But when I read some of the comments I went mmh.
The rivers in Northern Georgia have incredible diversity of fish. Cool catch
Thanks, yeah they’re a crazy place. Anything from 80 pound catfish to crazy finds like this.
Would you be willing to PM me the creek? I'm actually visiting Atlanta right now and would love to catch one of those if it's not too far of a drive from me.

My favorites are delta Niger killifish. I breed them more often then any others
Breed is not the right word here. Breed falls under species.
Look I’m not trying to get fully technical. Im exhausted and was just stating a fun and interesting fact….like with the Niger delta/ blue gularis etc…
Just say group next time. Breed is a technical term.
Are you alway this technical and snappy on Reddit? Your like the grammar police when English is still the language I struggle with. Who are you to say what I can and can’t say? A little absurd don’t you think?
Jesus christ dude chill out. I'm just trying to help people get their point across
That's a throw back fish
I think it is a breed of chub but I definitely have never seen one that looks like that they are good to eat though fry them whole
Immagin getting down votes for eating fish
They’re not, they’re getting downvotes because it isn’t a chub.
Makes sense
In Texas it would be a “perch”.
Not really, but call it a fish and you won't be wrong
