If we count Fire Emblem and Splatoon as Nintendo franchises, then the list gets big pretty quick. Splatoon got some messed up villians, Tar Tar and Grizz, and Fire Emblem got some pretty damn fucked up people too
Since when do most general Nintendo fans count fire emblem? They just think of it as “that shitty anime game that steals character slots in smash bros”
Mad King Ashnard and the whole Loptys Sect are up there with Ridley as truly fucked up nintendo villains, but it’s anime and it’s like half of Nintendo fans have an allergic reaction to anime
Anti-recency bias? It’s weird. Splatoon is one of Nintendo’s biggest IP in recent years, but it feels like outside of its dedicated community it doesn’t get discussed much. I haven’t touched Splat3 but I know it and Octo Expansion have some rather sinister villains by Nintendo standards.
I think the issue predominantly comes down to tone and aesthetics. It’s a lot harder to take a villain seriously for some people when the overall vibe of something comes off as immature and or goofy, and cartoony aesthetics also play a part in undermining it.
Case and point: Dimentio from Super Paper Mario. Only villain to ever canonically kill Mario, brainwashes Luigi to do his bidding, and when he loses, he tries to get the last laugh by dooming all worlds to become oblivion. By Mario standards, this is one of the most threatening villains in the franchise. However, the blocky aesthetic of SPM, the fact that said Hell is cheekily called “The Under-Where” as a silly pun, and even that it’s Mario undermines the drama for some people.
It’s why you’ll see some people deride Nintendo fans for even trying to claim Nintendo can make dark stories/villains, because in a greater context of all fiction, Nintendo games are rather soft in tone. Meanwhile, within the context of Nintendo’s IPs you’ll find villains that if given a more realistic aesthetic/tone would come across as super threatening.
Personally I love the contrast as it makes the villains pop out all the more. TV Tropes I believe calls this “Vile Villain, Saccharine Show”. I get why for some it may seem too goofy, but I thoroughly enjoy it
The Laguz prison in the lategame. You don’t even see the corpses but, the descriptions you get and the reactions of the characters. Shall never forget that.
Ridley and Ganondorf (as well as other Metroid villains and other Zelda villains) are the only Nintendo villains I take seriously. The rest are just a joke to me.
Ridley is just evil for the sake of being evil. I love it! He destroyed Samus’ home because he felt like it. He ate the flesh of the dead people of her hometown, and destroyed everything in his vicinity. He doesn’t have a motivation, he’s just an adrenaline junkie who loves killing. It’s honestly refreshing
Bowser: “I kidnapped peach and turned her subjects into blocks”
K.Rool: “I stole bananas from apes and almost destroyed dk’s island”
Ridley: “I murdered samus’s mother and taunted her about it when she was a child, so whenever she fights or sees me, she sees reminded of the very thing that killed the most important people of her childhood.”
I just want to point out that both Bowser and Doof are villains who try really hard to be evil but aren’t actually all that bad and are also great dads

I'd throw a few Xenoblade villains there too. Gort is especially fucked.
Like a hot knife through butter!
Why wouldn’t we count them?

Why wouldn’t we count Splatoon then?

Thank you for the explanation

Dimentio and Count Bleck are pretty tragic characters to.
Who is the guy on the bottom right?
Nazi
OH
Amon Göth, head of a concentration camp in Kraków during WWII. Ralph Fiennes played him in Schindler’s List.
Ridley and Ganondorf (as well as other Metroid villains and other Zelda villains) are the only Nintendo villains I take seriously. The rest are just a joke to me.
Princess shroob tried to commit genocide Just to tell you
Yeah, but she’s too funny looking to take them seriously.
Mf never played a Kirby game till the end
Kirby games are too easy for me to be honest.
Yeah, they’re children’s games. Most people don’t play them for the difficulty.

I only care about the gameplay, in general, and not the story to be honest. If I wanted to play a game for the story, then I would buy visual novels.
Have you played Fire Emblem games? Fire Emblem villains have committed rape, genocide, necrophilia, etc.
Rated E10
Super Metroid still has the E rating from ESRB, too
How? Kirby games are usually E 10
Okay that makes absolutely no sense. The Metroid rating was from when it was rereleased for Wii/Wii U VC
Yes, but I’m talking about gameplay. I don’t care about the story.
commander tartar from splatoon experimented on people and planned on using their remains to eliminate an entire species
Like I told another person here, I’m only talking about gameplay and not about the story.
Let me tell you about a little alien named Giygas.

Ridley is also quite intelligent and he uses his Intel to his advantage and that's why his nickname is the cunning God of death.
Would giygas go there too???
yes
Bowser: “I kidnapped peach and turned her subjects into blocks” K.Rool: “I stole bananas from apes and almost destroyed dk’s island” Ridley: “I murdered samus’s mother and taunted her about it when she was a child, so whenever she fights or sees me, she sees reminded of the very thing that killed the most important people of her childhood.”
Idk 100 year genocide is pretty bad
I just want to point out that both Bowser and Doof are villains who try really hard to be evil but aren’t actually all that bad and are also great dads
Don't do my man Doof like that... ... But yes, that's true.
Kirby villains: Am I a joke to you?
Yeah, Ridley is a curveball when it comes to nintendo villains with ganondorf just below.
Ganon destroyed hyrule
really interesting useing amon goeth as ridley
Ridley, Andross, Giygas, Dimentio, etc. There alot of genuinely evil Nintendo villains
What about Andross?
Ridley is the evilest, most horrible, thing that you can imagine multiplied by 6
