Jeff and Elliott are brilliant. Jeff had such angelic vocal range, and Elliott had an oddly comforting voice that made you feel a little sad whenever you'd hear it. Both incredible at guitar as well 💔
I was listening to his first album on headphones at work a few weeks ago and had to turn it off cos it was making me cry at my desk. Definitely the most on brand I’ve been in a while
When it comes to singer songwriters, I always think of either Elliott or Jeff tweedy. Both of them were very influential, and were big Part of my life. They're music will always be in my heart.
Elliott is the only "sad singer-songwriter" guy I can really get into, other than maybe Nick Drake but i'm not super into him. Theres just something different about his music to me
I just started listening to Earle yesterday. Fabulous. For anyone wondering about Townes van Zandt, start with his self-titled album from 1969. It’s perfect from start to finish. If you want more, the album Our Mother the Mountain next and the live album Live from the Old Quarter.
Nick Drake should definitely be there too
And Jason Molina
And Vic Chesnutt, David Berman and Richard Swift
Vic doesn’t get enough credit
Good call
Who are the not Jeff Buckley or elliott smith ones
Justin townes earle (top right) and townes van zandt (bottom right)

David berman for sure belongs up there b
Thank you
Nick Drake, Jason Molina, David Berman and Mark Linkous should be added.
Definitely Jason Molina and Mark Linkous. I'd add Vic Chesnutt too.
I once made a playlist consisting of just songs from Elliott, Berman, Molina and Linkous. 🤷🏻♂️
That sounds absolutely incredible. I love all four so much.
It’s good stuff. ✌🏽
This post sent me down a Vic Chesnutt path that I am enjoying so much.
Love it when that happens. I often do it in YouTube, get reminded of an artist I haven't heard in a while and then obsess over them for a few days!
Indeed. 💙✌🏽💙
Jason Molina is angelic
He was just brilliant. He has so many lyrics that just stay with me.
Good adds. Love Nick Drake, not familiar with the others
Mark Linkous is Sparklehorse, if you’re familiar.
Ok, i know sparklehorse for sure. Thanks
It appears we have the same music type. ✌🏽
David Berman was Silver Jews and Purple Mountains. Jason Molina was Songs:Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co.
Ohhhhh… i love Silver Jews and Purple Mountains! I didn’t know he passed away
Yeah, he committed suicide shortly after Purple Mountains album was released. 😓😢
This is way too accurate. I’d like to add Vic Chesnutt as well
Just wrote this above before I scrolled down!
Same. Also Richard Swift
Jeff and Elliott are brilliant. Jeff had such angelic vocal range, and Elliott had an oddly comforting voice that made you feel a little sad whenever you'd hear it. Both incredible at guitar as well 💔
It’s always amazed me how underrated Elliott was on guitar. And frankly any instrument he picked up.
Van Zandt died in his 50s I wanna say which is a ripe old age for a deeply troubled and addicted musician
True, 52 was an eternity compared to the rest.
I was listening to his first album on headphones at work a few weeks ago and had to turn it off cos it was making me cry at my desk. Definitely the most on brand I’ve been in a while
I didn't know Justin Townes Earle was dead until reading this post.
this post is the equivalent of #sadgirlautumn & "therapists hate them 😂😂😂😂" posts
Okay but Jeff didn't have a "deep drug addiction" and it's kind of insulting to suggest he did.
Ya, from all the description says there’s a varying degree of drug use with him… so “deep” was not the correct word for him
Yeah I mean I’m not even sure he was an addict. I know he talked about drug use but I don’t think he ever had any real addiction issues.
Ya, there’s plenty of secondhand descriptions of him using. But he definitely wasn’t an addict. I should replace him here with Nick Drake
When it comes to singer songwriters, I always think of either Elliott or Jeff tweedy. Both of them were very influential, and were big Part of my life. They're music will always be in my heart.
Probably my two favourite musicians.
Who’s on the top right?
Justin Townes Earle
Look up “who am I to say” by justin townes earle. When you read more into his life story and how he died, it’s a heartbreaking song.
I’ve been listening to this one on repeat today.
Elliott is the only "sad singer-songwriter" guy I can really get into, other than maybe Nick Drake but i'm not super into him. Theres just something different about his music to me
I understand, but we really shouldn't be romanticizing this g
Ya, not sure whos romanticizing it. Just stating a trend In musicians I like
I just started listening to Earle yesterday. Fabulous. For anyone wondering about Townes van Zandt, start with his self-titled album from 1969. It’s perfect from start to finish. If you want more, the album Our Mother the Mountain next and the live album Live from the Old Quarter.
i blame my mom for putting on grace so fucking often when i was growing up, she gave me emo singer-songwriter brainworms lol
Justin 3
Richard Swift also comes to mind
Where’s Jim Croce? He’s just as good as any of the others on here
I feel personally attacked
Phoebe Bridgers should be in there
I don’t think she is dead
Also Rowland S. Howard.
Too true
Shaker graves seems right up your alley!
Mine are Elliott Smith, Kurt Cobain, Ian Curtis, Phil Ochs, Nick Drake, Jackson C. Frank.
This hits a tad too close to home for me.
upvote for JTE. Miss that guy so
