I actually really love live renditions of that song[*] — **_ESPECIALLY_** their performance of it at their very first concert ever at Scala in London, England, UK at 10:00pm GMT (aka 22:00 GMT) on Thursday 22 March, 2001 (which they performed after having played M1-A1, Tomorrow Comes Today, and Slow Country, making 5/4 the 4th song that Gorillaz ever performed live EVER).
Cuz what _REEEALLY_ hits the sweet-spoy for me is the part that comes after they sing the "She turned my dad on!" part for the first time — when they go "She turned my DAD ON, DAD ON, DAD!" then "2-D" and "Noodle" play that dope riff on the keyboard and lead electric guitar respectively for a bit, then "Russel" comes in to bang on the drums as well, then both "he" and "Noodle" stop playing so all you hear is "2-D" playing the last half of the riff on the keyboard then "Russel" BANGS on his drums then bangs on them again while "Noodle" and "Murdoc" also slam on the strings of their lead electric guitar & electric bass guitar respectively while "2-D" also starts up the 2nd verse of the song with "MAGIC FOR ME..." all at the same time and it just sounds like a MASSIVE explosion going off to begin the next verse...
...Also sounding like a MASSIVE explosive burst of pyrotechnics should have gone off at that moment as well, and it also feels like the stage lights should have dimmed down while they were playing the riff so as to only barely Illuminate the band, then they should have also EXPLODED BACK UP TO FULL BRIGHTNESS and started flashing and moving about as they do when the pyro hit and the guitar/bass/drums were strummed/hit in a SUPER explosive manner as the 2nd verse began. That's what I see in my mind whenever I listen to this particular rendition of the song! If you're interested to hear it, here's their WHOLE ENTIRE _first concert ever_ (in audio-form only, though the second link I'll post will be an upload of the handful of songs at the concert that WERE videotaped by MTV, but they didnt do the whole show; however the whole show WAS recorded on audio only, which as i said is the 1st link). Although they did also perform 1 encore song that night — Clint Eastwood (Ed Case & Sweetie Irie Refix) — but sadly that part wasn't recorded.
The entire concert except for their encore performance of Clint Eastwood [Ed Case & Sweetie Irie Refix], so 13 of the 14 songs they'd play that night (audio-only): https://youtu.be/MBmnePe4a6U (5/4 begins at 11:50 and the part I referred to goes from 12:40 to 13:03)
About half of the concert, so 7 of the 14 songs they'd play that night (video & audio, filmed for a promotional VHS): https://youtu.be/iDBDrRZ3mHc (5/4 sadly wasn't included in this footage)
([*]Which they recently performed live for the very first time since the final concert of the first ever Gorillaz World Tour of 2001-2002 [The Isle of MTV Festival at Torre de Belém in Lisbon Portugal on 20 July, 2002] — at a handful of the concerts of their latest world tour, The 2022 World Tour; aka The Song Machine World Tour, aka The Cracker Island World Tour.)
Wow u typed a whole paragraph on the song, and yes I read some of it I agree the live performances for 5/4 and the one rock the house performance are amazing
🤷🏼 Gorillaz is my most favouritest band of all-time. So I'll always have a _lot_ to say about them & their music when the topic comes up. 🤷🏼
Although in reality, that only _looks_ like some big huge essay because it's been written-out. But if it was to actually be spoken aloud, then it'd seem like a **_SIGNIFICANTLY_** shorter statement.
IIRC It was going to be the first single with a video but the budget they got wasn’t enough and instead they made _Tomorrow Comes Today_ and only later they got more money. So they definitely had trust in that song to be a hit and have its own video.
My only complaint with 5/4 is that it doesn't stick entirely within 5/4. I'm totally fine with changing time signatures but like, if you're naming the song after the time signature it's pretty weird not to stick to it.
The entire plastic beach island commented on my post I am so honored, and uh no yeah I think it is underrated I barely hear anyone mention the song at all
Ma Research is just really annoying, I can't listen to this. But I agree with the rest of the post, especially with Latin Simone, New Genius and Sound Check
https://youtu.be/lMbgIvLGY28 - you might have seen but if not you should check out this really cool fan made video based off of the original storyboard for 5/4
The whole album brooooo. Sad that other Gorillaz fans that came after self titled album have this album so low on their list... Rehash still remains one of my top 3 songs to this day!
Hahahaha dude I love all their music, I should’ve put a disclaimer out their first 😅 I thought Cracker Island was amazing. Just trying to remind these youngins the roots of this crazy cool band and the raaaange they got.
Heck yeah! I bought their album after hearing Clint Eastwood and loved every song. Been a Gorillaz fan ever since :) the first is still my 2nd or 3rd favorite album by Gorillaz. Great songs
I don't really know what you eat by underrated everyone I know LOVES these songs. They might be underrated but I'm not sure lol. There all awesome songs though I love em all.
I love that album/EP collection of songs. Probably been a while since I went down the rabbit hole on YouTube for the various versions of Latin Simone. Hazy memory of laika come home 🤔 so guess that's something to listen to on the weekend
5/4 is good but its underrated for a reason, the song isn't really what gorillaz is known for, they're more vibey, no offense but 5/4 sounds like Daman Albarns is today's substitute because Marilyn Manson is out sick
Rock the house is a bop!!
RIGHT!
rock the house SLAPSSSSSSS
I know you like that
TAP YA TOES AND CLAP YA HANDS
(HOW MANY PEOPLE READY TO ROCK THE HOUSE)
‘Gorillaz’ is just a smashing record from front to back. Not a weak link in the chain IMO.
Third best after DD & PB IMO I used to think second best but I like PB more now
Exactly
5/4 and new genius are hard as fuck
EXACTLY
New Genius was so good live
So basically all of self-titled lol

True
God hearing Dracula live kills me, I love that song
Isn’t 5/4 one of the more popular tracks on self-titled?
IIRC It was going to be the first single with a video but the budget they got wasn’t enough and instead they made _Tomorrow Comes Today_ and only later they got more money. So they definitely had trust in that song to be a hit and have its own video.
I have no clue, from what i know it's Clint eastwood, tomorrow comes today, and 19-2000
That's very true.
There's way more underrated songs in the first album
Especially rock the house
5/4 is literally a top 5 Gorillaz track for me
The song is my #1 favorite
My only complaint with 5/4 is that it doesn't stick entirely within 5/4. I'm totally fine with changing time signatures but like, if you're naming the song after the time signature it's pretty weird not to stick to it.
No yeah I understand that
Entire s/t is underrated! Re-hash has been one of my favorite wake up songs for over a decade now lmaoo
EXACTLY THE FIRST ALBUM IS SO UNDERRATED, and I agree re-hash is an amazing song same with Double bass
Yeah it had honestly fallen down my in head ranking but after relistening to it for the first time in years, it shot right back up aldkgh
IT'S A SWEET SENSATION OVER THE DUB!
The fan video is good as but also double bass is so good
EXACTLY honestly it's my 3rd favorite song from the first album
125/100? Underrated? Wow. I mean it's a great song but that's just.. off the charts
The entire plastic beach island commented on my post I am so honored, and uh no yeah I think it is underrated I barely hear anyone mention the song at all
It was just a joke. I was acting as though 5/4 was a score. Also, i'm honored by the fact that you're honored <:
I didn't get it but we'll pretend I did
Ma Research is just really annoying, I can't listen to this. But I agree with the rest of the post, especially with Latin Simone, New Genius and Sound Check
Fair but we can both agree the English Latin Simone is just hard to listen to
Agreed
But not star shine? :-(
I put ETC for a reason, but yea I agree starshine is underrated
https://youtu.be/lMbgIvLGY28 - you might have seen but if not you should check out this really cool fan made video based off of the original storyboard for 5/4
Latin Simone is definitely underrated IMO. I adore both versions of that song so much 💕
The whole album brooooo. Sad that other Gorillaz fans that came after self titled album have this album so low on their list... Rehash still remains one of my top 3 songs to this day!
I said this once and got called a gatekeeper so I don’t say anything anymore lol
Hahahaha dude I love all their music, I should’ve put a disclaimer out their first 😅 I thought Cracker Island was amazing. Just trying to remind these youngins the roots of this crazy cool band and the raaaange they got.
Facts! And same! But when you remind people that you had to be there, they get a little defensive lol
SHE TURNED MY DAD ONNNNNNN
MAGIC FOR ME
Don't forget Dracula!
Heck yeah! I bought their album after hearing Clint Eastwood and loved every song. Been a Gorillaz fan ever since :) the first is still my 2nd or 3rd favorite album by Gorillaz. Great songs
Self titled is so fuckin good
Rock the house is my favorite gorillaz song
I don't really know what you eat by underrated everyone I know LOVES these songs. They might be underrated but I'm not sure lol. There all awesome songs though I love em all.
5/4 is my favorite Gorillaz song
I love that album/EP collection of songs. Probably been a while since I went down the rabbit hole on YouTube for the various versions of Latin Simone. Hazy memory of laika come home 🤔 so guess that's something to listen to on the weekend
ITS OMG
5/4 is top 5 for me. One of the first tracks I ever heard.
I said it before and I’ll say it again…..it spends MONTHS AT A TIME in the car player. Playful, sonic, intense, melodic and damn close to perfect
Man research
EXACTLY NEW GENIUS GOES HARD
So what you’re saying is the album is a masterpiece.
S HE TURNED MY D A D O N!!
M1 A1 is a dope track too
Best album by far
double bass is the best song on that album so
Ghost train too
5/4 is a banger
5/4 is good but its underrated for a reason, the song isn't really what gorillaz is known for, they're more vibey, no offense but 5/4 sounds like Daman Albarns is today's substitute because Marilyn Manson is out sick
I would love to hear your thoughts on D-Sides
Welcome to the Man Research Breakfast/ Fan Club! We’ve got an impressive five members by, now, if we hit six I’ll bring a platter of cookies
