Ive been i fan of Gorillaz for only 3 weeks now and I can say with full confidence, 5/4 is my favourite song by them. Though, I cant decide what my second and third favourite are lol.
All alone is amazing. I especially love the part where the girl sings (I don't know who it is) it just sounds so out of world and soothing at the same time.
Martina Topley-Bird. She was involved with Tricky for some time (they had at least one daughter together) and has a successful solo career while also appearing on several of his early albums.
Aries. It is one of the coolest songs they have ever written. The guitar riff is so sublime. And the beat on those 80s synth drums is so funky. I have listened to this song 1000 times I bet.
"I'm looking out at a volcano, trying to read the world today to see where you're at"... "I'm standing on beach in the distance and even though you're far away can you see my red light? it's waiting to turn green. I feel so isolated without you, I can't play a happy tune on my own; so stay by my side, low or high tide."
And they repeat high tide over and over in the chorus because she makes him feel high all the time. Dude is over the moon for whomever he's singing about. It's so beautiful.
I’ll be honest - I think the problem is that Song Machine had so many unbelievably good bangers that almost every song on that record feels underrated. Aries would have been an instant classic if it were on The Now Now or Cracker Island.
Demon Days and Plastic Beach are always considered the best Gorillaz albums (for good reason), but give Song Machine some time and I think that people will quickly start to consider it a classic and quite possibly the best record Gorillaz has ever made. It’s absurd how good damn near every single track on that album is.
Aries RULES. Such a good song. Also, not to be rude or anything, but I always thought that the main riff of the song was played in a bass. With Peter Hook on the track you never know haha
That bassline is superb. I was fortunate enough to get into Gorillaz in 2001, so to me they’re always gonna be about that phat bass and cool drums. “Bill Murray” has both.
Some of these may not actually be underrated but it seems people don’t often talk about them:
5/4
Punk
Sound Check (Gravity)
Double Bass
Latin Simone (both versions)
Starshine
Slow Country
M1 A1
O Green World
Every Planet We Reach Is Dead
November Has Come
Welcome to the World of The Plastic Beach
Superfast Jellyfish
Glitter Freeze
Some Kind of Nature

Plastic Beach
To Binge
Pirate Jet
*The entirety of The Fall*
Charger
Busted and Blue
Fire Flies
Dead Butterflies
Silent Running (piano version)
Just to name a few :)
Still mad we never got this on the Anniversary release of ST. How dare they deprive us! "Hand Clapper" had so much more than what we expected. And I'm sure "GOR Beaten" does too.
From what I’ve heard, Apple Carts is now officially on the Damon Albarn solo album Dr. Dee. It was originally thought of during the plastic beach era, so it got placed onto fan-made album Sea-Sides. I understand the misconception though.
Some Kind of Nature and Kids With Guns.
I realise Kids with Guns was a single, but the fact they made it a double A side with El-manana and didn't give it a proper music video hampered it's success in my opinion.
Definitely Cloud of Unknowing for me, never hear anyone mention it. It's why I like Possession Island so much, its due to the shared likeliness of it's plasticy brother.
One of the songs I've always loved, but never see people talk about is some kind of nature. It has such a sweet sounding tune that always puts me in a good mood.
I guess I’ve heard it mentioned sometimes but honestly Amarillo does so much for me and makes me feel like I’m directly in my fav version of the Gorillaz world.
Also Stop the Dams is their most emotional song to me, truly impactful.
Left Hand Suzuki Method goes pretty hard
Bong rip at the beginning gives me chills
Bong rip? Nono, that’s very clearly just somebody blowing bubbles in their McDonalds chocolate milk.
Oh shit. My bad. It does sound THICC. You’re right
This is a solid answer too.
Just came here to say that. 👍

Top tier instrumental. Love this track.
Said it once I’ll say it again. Super fast jellyfish
I hear people talk about it more than All Alone, which is criminally underappreciated.
All alone is amazing. I especially love the part where the girl sings (I don't know who it is) it just sounds so out of world and soothing at the same time.

I didn’t even realize Aries was not popular I thought it was so good it was IMPOSSIBLE it wasn’t loved by everyone

Your comment is 100% valdi. It's damn near a perfect album.

Listening to Seattle Yodel is actually a blast when you learn it was sampled from a "Yodeling Pickle" trinket Damon found at a gift shop.
