Records are for playing!

Old_Robert_

Spin it! Spin it!

petercyril23

That’s what I came here to say - are you here to make money or expand your consciousness? Play it!!!!

DunkNuts_

Spin it man. Music was meant to be heard.

lowgear1

Play it LOUD!!!

Head-Skirt-5541

Open it wtf

chickachickabowbow

Buying a record and not listening to it is like buying a sandwich and not eating it.

lenzoneil

Agreed. Why even have it if you aren't going to enjoy it. Can't spread the love when it's wrapped in plastic.

MenuBar

> wrapped in plastic. Not to mention, but shrink-wrap plastic will warp the vinyl album eventually.

MorningDew5270

I didn't realize that. Thanks for mentioning it.

lowgear1

The only thing that shud be Wrapped Regularly is Ya Dick.

Spec-Tre

That’s exactly why condoms were made. So you can’t spread the love

Free-Finding9047

As Zevon would say....Enjoy Every Sandwich

TheBombDotOrg

Favorite quote of ever

zeef8391

Absolutely 1000% especially a dead vinyl...with the prices these things are nowadays, get all that sound quality you can outta them

Least-Firefighter392

And if that was a McDonald's sandwich if you leave it room temp for 20 years it will still look the same as well...

RecbetterpassNJ

Super size Me.

1864120

But it’s such a pretty sandwich

loudog1017

And the sandwich goes bad if you don’t eat it

dentalflossfarmer1

It looks/tastes even better when you open it

esplonky

Imagine buying a vinyl record just to look at the shrink wrapped sleeve

TheOther-DarkStar

Some people just buy to satisfy the collection. Are you telling me you’d rather listen to a show like 5/9/77 on vinyl when Help Slip Frank is all chopped up when you can just listen to the gapless SBD? I have every single live show box set they’ve put out so far. I have maybe listened to two of them. They look and sound great, but they can be so obnoxious to actually enjoy when you have to flip the record in the middle of (for example) Dark Star>St. Stephen. Don’t get me wrong, I almost always open them up to appreciate the box art or the included booklets/photos, but I probably won’t actually spin it more than once.

setlistbot

# 1977-05-09 Buffalo, NY @ War Memorial **Set 1:** Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower, Cassidy, Brown Eyed Women, Mexicali Blues, Tennessee Jed, Big River, Peggy-O, Sunrise, The Music Never Stopped **Set 2:** Bertha > Good Lovin', Ship Of Fools, Estimated Prophet > The Other One > Drums > Not Fade Away > Comes A Time > Sugar Magnolia **Encore:** Uncle John's Band [archive.org](https://archive.org/details/GratefulDead?query=date:1977-05-09)

esplonky

Yeah, if I buy something on vinyl, it's because I want to listen to it on vinyl. Not a very hard concept to grasp lmao. You make flipping to side B sound like it takes 30 minutes. Most Dead shows take up 3 CDs but I still try to subscribe to the Dave's Picks every year because of the novelty of having CDs I can pop in my car and have in there rather than fumble with Spotify while I drive. If you're buying music and not listening to it, that's a lot weirder than buying and using something as intended. Edit: even tapes had songs cut in half. It's just the nature of 3-5 hour live performances on physical media

TheOther-DarkStar

The action of flipping of the record is not the obnoxious part. It’s the fact that the jams are broken up. I clearly said that, you just wanted to insult me for not knowing how to flip a record apparently. Also seems like the pot calling the kettle black when you complain about “fumbling with Spotify” while you drive as if that’s so hard when you can just use voice commands. That wasn’t the point. The point was that some people want to buy the five record LP set for the goodies and the collection, not to listen to the vinyl as much as they would on Archive. You’re nuts if you think ANYONE prefers to listen to a full show on vinyl vs CD/streaming. And anyone who says otherwise is fibbing. You know it’s a better, uninterrupted experience that way. Some people got lizard brain and need to collect every piece of the memorabilia, wether they wanna rip it open or not is up to them. I hate when people tell other people “don’t take the plastic off” but I hate it even more when people act like anyone who WANTS to keep their items in its original condition is the freak.

KrackityJones

Uhh.. I would definitely 100% rather listen to vinyl. I have many a Dead show cut on wax and I regularly enjoy them.

esplonky

Buying music to not listen to is pretty weird bud.

TheOther-DarkStar

If collecting isn’t a hobby of yours then I guess you can’t understand, which is perfectly fine by me, but don’t call me bud. I definitely wouldn’t be buds with someone like you. My friends and I have record collections so big I couldn’t possibly even listen to all of them before I die, so yeah, occasionally I buy a record and don’t listen to it.

esplonky

I mean, I collect things as a hobby but they don't just sit on a shelf unused to look at? My collection gets *used* as it was intended to be because that's why I collect. "My friends and I have a record collection so big, I couldn't possibly even listen to all of them before I die" this is called Hoarding, not collecting. Honestly, the "uninterrupted" part isn't that huge of a deal to most people. The band grew on tapes where jams were cut in half, songs ended early/started late, etc. Or entire sections of shows were just missing entirely. I've got a tape from an 84 show that sort of just fades into a 1969 show at some point. Even David Lemieux has to make sacrifices and cut jams in half to fit the show across three CDs. It's just the nature of putting full dead shows on physical media at all unless you have some sort of magic way to make a CD player read DVDs. There is a HUGE tonal difference between Vinyl, Cassette, MP3, and FLAC versions of the recordings and you're ignoring that aspect on purpose.

TheOther-DarkStar

Hoarding and collecting are totally different. It’s not like my house is so over full with records that they are spilling over onto the floor and I’m constantly stepping on them. I have big shelves. And yes, especially in the record collecting game, people collect pieces they have no intention of listening to. Like I just recently found a 77 copy of KISS Alive II with the booklet and temporary tattoos in perfect condition. I’m not gonna play it because I don’t want to risk damaging it. Instead I’ll buy another copy to listen to. I don’t think it’s neurotic at all. Edit: I wasn’t thinking about the tonal differences, just was looking at it from OPs perspective

TomorrowsPlayer

I agree with you...tho I've actually stopped buying....I'd listen once and then put away and listen to all my shows digitally....I figure me, my kids and their kids will probably all be dead B4 the stuff appreciates to that kind of value.....but I was addicted for sure ...still can't stop buying Dave's picks just because I have all Dick's and Dave's to date ...too late to stop now!!

I_Voted_For_Kodos24

buying a sleeve for it keeps it pretty

printerdsw1968

It’s prettier while spinning

Have the Warner 5 LP boxset sealed. It's been 12years. Kinda enjoy having the sealed box. It's weird. Hard to explain.

theRoyRoyRoy

But they said the McRib was limited edition…

DeadHead1954

Unless the sandwich can go up in value if left as is

haleakala420

ALWAYS SPIN IT!!!!

boutaquarterto

Record gonna be so sad if it doesn’t get played. Let it live it’s purpose!

MikeEllis_8159021

Open it, it’s not that rare that it’ll be worth anything crazy if u don’t open it. Also keeping records unwrapped for a long time cause the shrink wrap to tighten and eventually will warp your record.

1864120

This is what I needed to hear.

pratojr

Spin it! "Let there be songs to fill the air"

Estofil

That’s Otis!

megabeast2001

Ripple in still water

Estofil

I have my pretty newborn son here sleeping next to me. 18 days old. His name is Otis! Named after the dog of course. Just had to get that off my chest. And OP - spin that bad boy! It’s not like you ever gonna sell it.

psilosophist

Modern “collectors editions” are very rarely ever worth anything. As an example, see all the chromed out “Death of Superman” comic covers that 90s teens hoped would be worth something in the future (turns out, calling something a collectors edition is a great way of making sure it’ll have no resale value).

w0-lf

Or in my case, Red and Stimpy comics. I’m guessing the included air freshener doesn’t do it any justice these days.

Sufficient_Builder55

Spin ittttttttt. If you wanna invest buy silver. Records are meant to be played

cleanestline

Few years ago I got the Buffalo vinyl from 5/9/77 and there isn’t a day I regret opening it.

setlistbot

# 1977-05-09 Buffalo, NY @ War Memorial **Set 1:** Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower, Cassidy, Brown Eyed Women, Mexicali Blues, Tennessee Jed, Big River, Peggy-O, Sunrise, The Music Never Stopped **Set 2:** Bertha > Good Lovin', Ship Of Fools, Estimated Prophet > The Other One > Drums > Not Fade Away > Comes A Time > Sugar Magnolia **Encore:** Uncle John's Band [archive.org](https://archive.org/details/GratefulDead?query=date:1977-05-09)

JerryGarciaFinger

That second set is something else, what a freaking blast that must’ve been to be there

bdim14

At The Aud too ... what an incredible show all around.

mshoneybadger

Play the record

w0-lf

Yahhhh. Playyyyy!

undermind84

> Should I spin it or keep it mint? It makes me sad that this is even a question.

Open-Significance512

Spin it.

redjeep1228

Always open records, always listen, sometimes do it while on acid

printerdsw1968

wise words, right here

AdamClay2Klbs

Spin it. Life is short.

FUNKYOSELF

Spin it or what the fuck is the point? Unless you have 2 copies…

blackertai

I mean, I don't know why we buy these except to listen to them.

rogger1no

I found a mint 1st edition shakedown street at my local shops about 6 years ago. It’s “worth” a lot less now that I’ve opened and played it (in terms of arbitrary $ amounts online), but the 1-2 times I listen to it every year create priceless joy and good memories. There are things you can replace, and others you cannot. Records can be replaced, play them all :)

athinnes

I have copies of Veneta, Cornell, and a few Dicks/Daves picks that were limited and numbered. Opened all a soon as I got them. Let that bad boy sing.

AffectionateCar3742

Me too! Gotta love Naked Pole Guy in Veneta!

DiabetesCOLE

Records are meant to be played

Body-Reasonable

I you bought a record, presumably to listen to not to horde or cherish. Take care of it, but listen to the goddamn thing. Enjoy it. If you take care of it, it’ll outlive you. My dad’s first pressing copy of that record is immaculate. And it’s been well enjoyed for nearly 50 years. Go rip that goddamn plastic off and spin it!!

Im_regretting_this

Play it, to hell with collector’s shit.

This_Piglet_3487

If you don’t at least listen to it, then all you have is plastic garbage

amayain

If you get confused, listen to the music play

FamilleWoodStudio

Crank that bad boy up✌️❤️🔥

Select_Protection440

I have been spinning mine

Blastoplast

Spin it, the pressing sounds good and looks pretty too

FrowAway322

Personally, I get collecting but I think music is meant to be enjoyed!

iamnotafingerpuppet

Open it!

dutchdynasty

👏🏻records👏🏻are👏🏻meant👏🏻to 👏🏻be👏🏻played👏🏻

Chipilliboi

Why buy a record and never listen to it?.. I can understand buying 2 and not opening one but this is a bit strange imo

zoso19591

Spin it brother.

BuddhPete

Spin it.

1864120

Ok fuck it. Time to give into my impulses and give it a spin. Will post pics in a few hours.

BocadeOuro

Just buy a second, non limited pressing to listen to. Especially if it is colored vinyl, which in my experience is noisy.

natwashboard

So true. Lotta pops.

warrensussex

I think modern colored vinyl might be a lot better than it used to be. I've got colored and clear vinyl that sound fine. My dad's old zeppelin bootlegs that are colored sound like shit.

SippingAndListening

This is true.

1864120

It is the colored vinyl.

RelationMaleficent63

I also got the rainbow version and it sounds incredible!

BocadeOuro

Just get another copy to play. There’s zero chance the limited edition sounds better, and it could sound worse in my opinion. If it were me I would stash this one away. My guess is it will never be worth less than what you paid for it… unless you open it. And if you open it, decent chance you end up regretting it.

MenuBar

> And if you open it, decent chance you end up regretting it. As I stated earlier, shrink-wrap can warp the vinyl album if left on. Open it and put it in an acid-free sleeve. Save the free acid for when you spin it.

SippingAndListening

> There’s zero chance the limited edition sounds better This is simply not true.

davidnickbowie

Let the music play

sometimeswemeanit

Play your records.

RelaxedOctopus420

Spin that shit boiiiii

zinloos_ttv

Why buy it if ain’t gonna play it?

PepeLePeww

Open it. If a record is truly rare/valuable, the value doesn't drastically change if it is opened or not, as long as its in good condition.

JohnnyFuckingMc

SPIN IT!

Top-Abrocoma-3729

Spin it! It’s Grateful Dead, not Dusty Dead

Curpaholic

Do you wanna have fun or look at it for awhile before passing it off to some offsprings

DennisBallShow

KEEP IT SECRET, KEEP IT SAFE! Actually just open the darn record and SPIN IT!

thebrianeno

Always spin it, let the music play!

TreyDHD

Absolutely open it, or buy the regular edition and open that.

HorrorBusiness1234

Open everything

mrglumdaddy

Toys are for playing with, not looking at.

TheLurkerBelow83

Bro, Brown Eyed Women is like a top top tier song, open that shit up and let's jam!!!!

Bolognapony666

SPIN

narwhal4u

Unless you have a climate controlled room you must take it out of the plastic. It will shrink over time and warp the record. Get a poly vinyl sleeve to protect it over time.

JRPGPD

Did you buy it to look at the special stickers???

PantsPoopington

wwjd🤷‍♂️?

SevereIdea

Unless you’re saving it like some sort of investment, I say open it! It will never realize it’s true glory until opened and spinning on your turn table.

InhibitedExistence

It's not an investment. Play it and crank it.

keepitcleanforwork

$130 for Europe '72? Jebus.

1864120

I got it on preorder so I paid quite a bit less than that.

sgurdmai

Records are for spinning with friends, beers and big fat joints. Enjoy!

snorchporch

Spinning it would be pretty Mint

Hibbzzz

Always gotta spin it brother! Music over money!

kjkorman

It’s meant to be “spun”

Snaps_Deadtree

live your life, listen to the music play!!

Pittsburgh-Nelly

Great milky chance album ya got there

Han-Shot_1st

Play the damn record

username_obnoxious

I mean I've been playing my Dad's Europe '72 vinyl for 20 years, and he's been playing it for much longer than that.

D1rtyH1ppy

It's a reprint, right? I'd open it up

Steven1789

How much could it possibly appreciate? It’s not like these recordings aren’t widely available, and even if there are a lot of completist Deadheads, how much money are you going to make? Since you bought it, enjoy it.

ghost_pepper22

Records are meant to be played. Let it breathe.

Gnarwhal_YYC

If you’re not fixin to sell ‘er, spin that ish!!

JudgeImaginary4266

Records were meant to be listened to, not shelved.

TyrusRaymond

Spock - what is the purpose of a record album ? Answer - to be played , Spock - therefore to not play it would be ?

gaporkbbq

What the fuck.

Swagmeoutpls

I bought this same one with the rainbow pattern, definitely play it bud

degenerateautist69

Totally understand your hesitations, but remember that sealed products only add value when they’re retro, not when they’re new. Crack that baby open, pack a fat bowl, and kick your feet up!

Aoxomoxoa75

100% spin it and enjoy it! 👍👍👍

myobeez

I play ALL my records! They are there for my enjoyment!

petron5000

Like saving your girlfriend for the next guy.

wanda4president

It’s probably not gonna appreciate in value. Just listen to it

ellistyle1

Spin it, bro.

Iko87iko

It’s meant to be played

puzzledplatypus

Records are meant to be listened to.

doozle

Spin it you goon!

AWest1111

Spin it!

HanSoloAsshole69

Music is made to be played

D-e-s-o-l-a-t-e

Shrink wrap is terrible for wax long term, causes all sorts of warping. Open and play it

Internal-Bag2568

That’s a tuffy….How much did it cost??

1864120

Abt tree fiddy

JohnDivney

the reason it would be worth money unopened is because that would be the only way to *listen* to the rare sounds. But we don't live in that world anymore, it will be re-pressed at some point, and then only it's edition would be worth anything, which isn't much compared to were it unobtainable otherwise. yes, same thing with comics, used to be the only way to 'know what happened' was to own it, but now with digital technology, that's moot.

TheAtomicPunk95

“If you get confused, listen to the music play.”

singlewall

Spin to win

McnuggetMaster

Spin it and take care of it. Good needles and a good player

ryanoceros666

Did you buy it to enjoy it out as an investment? Once you decide you have your answer.

jsharge

Spin the black circle!

Bigredmachine878

Meant to be spun my dude. Drop the needle

Dbushman219

Albums are made to be played

Troubadour1985

I save sealed records for special occasions

madirish098

Music never stops

megabeast2001

Think about if jerry would want you to spin it or not. You have now found your answer.

1864120

Jer does not care. But I went ahead and opened it anyways.

alphaMonk49

No record should stay mint ❤️ Spin it and drink something to match the occassion, even if you wear gloves to handle it.

AggravatingLuck2407

Spin it! If you get confused, listen to the music play.

Few-Breadfruit-8284

Is it the rainbow colored vinyl? I missed the boat. I would’ve kept it sealed.

Streetvan1980

Open it. 5000 isn’t that small. The Daves Picks aren’t that many more. So enjoy the music!! I often wonder in even like 20-30 years if a lot of this dead stuff will even be worth anything. Are fans going to be as hard core or will there be as many? Early Dave’s picks can go for insane prices. But even the early ones when not nearly as many were made as now possibly in 20-40 years the fan base will be much smaller. Idk. Who knows how it will go. Less and less who actually saw them. Less and less who knew someone who turned them onto the dead who actually saw them. I wonder what the future holds jn general for the fanbase. There will always be dead fans. Just wonder how many

Talosian_cagecleaner

Unopened limited edition vinyl will not command enough premium. It is not like other collectibles, like film stuff, where if you have an unopened Boba Fett doll that is basically all that is valuable. Just open it, and play it well and keep your stystem on point, and you can resell limited editions at near mint (no pops, no scratches!) for something, at least. The dead is pumping out so much vinyl of its shows, which, umm, were never on any format, except trader tapes. Not exactly sure if these discs are "I can resell this later!" products frankly. I have no memories at all of experiencing the magic of a recorded dead show via vinyl except the 3 early canonical ones by the band itself. Vinyl is a trend. And not something that has ever been part of the dead scene until this recent resurgence of vinyl lifestyle audio gear. Just saying. I don't get it.

InternationalSock204

Sounds a lot better when you play it

AsheStriker

This shouldn’t even be a question.

bacontacooverdrive

If you want to start a business and sell records, open a store. Otherwise spin it. Life is too short, and they could always repress it in 10 years.

r0wjimmy

Records are for playing. Grateful Dead records doubly so. You want something to look at, collect art and hang it on the wall.

cellarman420

Spin that shit, DJ

MyCariniHeadIsLumpy

YOLO - spin it

ok_u_skidmark

Fuck it spin it SPIN IT

GRPNR1P89

Can’t hear it if you don’t spin it

gatmantony

I opened mine!

DouglyNormal

Minority and contrarian opinion: leave it. First, there are other ways to hear that music; the songs fill the air regardless of whether this particular limited edition gets played. Second, as someone who owns vinyl, CDs, and a Terrabyte of audio files (MP3s, FLACs, AIFFs), I believe that there are differences between formats... but for most of the systems I have to play on and the ears I have at my age, there's no premium to vinyl. Third, if you've kept it sealed, then you potentially have an investment, especially if you can listen to the album in any of the other ways noted. YMMV - an especially applicable saying in this case.

chemprofdave

Whether you open it or not is closely related to whether you are a Bolo or a Bozo. But I ain’t saying which is which.

gratefulD83

Buy 2. Spin 1 keep 1 mint.

warrensussex

That's awful greedy to buy 2 of a limited release just to keep 1 mint.

gratefulD83

What’s the point of having a mint album? That nobody can hear?

warrensussex

Why don't you tell me? Since you're the one suggesting it.

gratefulD83

If your buying the album for the value of the music inside why not just open and share? If you are buying the album to keep in plastic in hopes to sell some day for more that might be considered greedy. What I was saying if your in a position to buy 2 why have a dilemma.

warrensussex

Greed. Buying 2 of a limited release in the hopes that it will go up in value is like buying a ticket to turn around and resell it and one to listen to. It's just greedy.

gratefulD83

That’s basically what I just said. But to each their own. A wise man once said “life only comes around once, so do whatever makes you happy. I’m greedy for suggesting he buy 2 now I get it.

warrensussex

You aren't greedy for suggesting he buy 2. It's the buying 2 itself that is greedy.

gratefulD83

Greedy to buy 2 if it wasn’t limited?

ToshiroBaloney

Records are meant to be played, for crying out loud.

Fen1972

Nail it to your wall and take a picture of it with your feet showing.

2024maga

Buy a nice bottle of wine but don't open it! - spend an evening looking at it in a nice quiet room while fondling the record case.

memberer

keep it mint

Leading_Quarter_5373

Keep it mint. Play the cd. No difference

gratefuldoodle

hot take: europe 72 is way overrated, sell it and just listen on stream if you really wanna hear the same set list every night

tlpeterson

Overrated? Wtf are you talking about?

1864120

Overrated how?

NecessaryGur4767

Spin spin spin!!

hominyhominy

Play it! And drink the bottle of wine that you’ve been saving for a special occasion.

stevemkto

Spin it. Doesn’t give you any joy in a wrapper. If you still have doubts, buy 2. 😎

wakajawaka45

man hot take i guess, but i’m saying keep it sealed. you know what europe ‘72 sounds like…

lendmeflight

Whether you play it or not records, especially double or triple records, are not good left sealed. It will probably warp the vinyl at some point.

facethief1943

Rock and roll reefer bowl !

smc4414

Spin it dude, always Or leave it wrapped for your great grand kids make 15 dollars on it.

Robert_Tilton_

open it and keep the stickers!

bunsonh

There is nothing scarce about this. The #/5,000 sticker means *this batch* was limited, but there are hundreds of thousands of these in the wild. In other words, the *true* thing that makes this artifact special are the sounds that got carved into the wax. So listen to them.

USBlues2020

Enjoy it After all you deserve it 👏
