Barcade seems like such a date spot. I’ve been a handful of times and have never seen another solo person at the bar, just lots and lots of awkward dates. which are fun to listen in on, but definitely not a place that seems welcoming to solo diners/drinkers.
Second ordinary. Maybe make a reservation even for a bar spot depending on when you go.
Those bartenders really know their stuff. Incredible cocktails and fun food.
I think my off the cuff answer is Trinity. Low key atmosphere and there’s a lot of room so you can either do your own thing (not bothering anyone) or, if you’re social, glom on to other conversations.
On slower nights, Ordinary is a good answer here. Bartenders are always great to chat with. However, this is a smaller bar that can get busy and I think a solo drinker might end up feeling like they’re taking up space.
All bars in New Haven are fine for this, I think the large number of Yalies from all over the country/world have made dining & drinking alone pretty acceptable all over town. I was at Tavern on State last night, which is hip and busy FYI, and 2 people had dinners and drinks alone up at the bar.
I woukd agree. That said, I have had particularly good experiences with this at Cask Republic (RIP), Zinc, Barcade, Rudy's, and on the right night: BAR (over on the right), Geronimo, Elm City Social (downstairs), and Ordinary.
Granted that was about 5 years ago, based on where my apartment was located, and I'm also pretty comfortable going solo most places, but these stuck out.
I’ve only been with people to elm city social but it’s the first bar that comes to mind— I’d def go back by myself and the bartenders can be friendly even when pretty packed :)
Bar August, Firehouse 12, Three Sheets, Anchor Spa, Cave a Vin, Ordinary, 116 Crown, Rudy’s, Cannon. Any brewery: Armada, East Rock, NEBCO.
Cafe Nine and Stella Blues if there’s a good show. Gather has beer and has nice events.
There’s probably more bars that are good for a chill solo experience than not.
Question: how do you guys approach people when alone at a bar to make friends?? When I go to bars alone (granted not in New Haven yet) I always feel like either no one is interested in socializing or people just try to hit on me.
Barcade, just play games

Ordinary if you want a solid cocktail and to chill, barracuda if you want to meet some fun co-drinkers

Cafe 9. The Musician's Living Room. Nice for all folks though.
Trinity!
Bar August is nice. I like to go there and read & chit chat with whomever is behind the bar
That bar at Nolo is great solo if you want to eat too.

I’ve been sitting alone at bars for weeks trying to have this happen. It worked out once. Best of luck
I regularly go to Rudy's alone
